I got my q6600 today and got everything up and running. On a evga 680i mobo and a Tuniq Tower 120 on the B3 stepping. I got everything working, and went and checked the temperature in the bios and it it rated at around 80-85C. Needless to say I was a little worried... running so high on stock settings? Then i went and checked out the temps in speedfan and it was rating each core at around 60C! (And speedfan incorrectly displays temps 15C below actual) So either i somehow mounted the HS wrong (doubtfully but seemingly possible) or the temps are reading out wrong. Any ideas whats going on here? I'd take it apart, reapply the paste, and put it back together but it was such a pain in the first place I'm not so keen on it...

These chips run hot. Especially 2 core 2 duo chips packaged into one and the older stepping. Too much for most heatsinks.

I found out that applying the thermal compound is the most important thing. What compound are you using? Too much or too little will affect the temp greatly.

I was told if you are using Artic Silver use this technique to apply onto your cpu.

If you are using the crappy white stuff that came with the heatsink, try using a credit card or use a clean clear plastic and wrap it around your finger and spread it around evenly.

But also check how your fan is running.

Speedfan temp core aren't exaclty correct. You'll have to add another 14°C to it.

Also check to see if your heatsink is totally flat and not warped. Use a metal ruler or a credit card to check it out.

As it turns out, the mobo has two square shaped whatevers above the cpu. And with the particular case i have, and the HUGE block, i couldn't see it at all. I had REAL problems mounting it fitting my hands in there. Long story short the cpu block was resting slightly on these two blocks, which were raised above the actual cpu a little. So lack of contact... hope I didn't damage the cpu core. Everything running at around 32C now...
