I've been browsing through AMD and Intel CPUs and was wondering how well does a Q6600 compare to a Phenom 9850? I am looking for a mix of gaming and 3d rendering performance- but namely gaming performance.

Here's a review that includes both:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/14424

The 9850 and Q6600 seem to be fairly close to each other. If you're interested in overclocking though, Core 2s generally overclock well, whereas Phenoms are not good overclockers, and so when overclocked the Q6600 will probably pull ahead.

it comes down to if your going to OC or not if you are the Q6600 is a far better CPU

what if you are not planning on overclocking? i've been lurking and reading/researching before i ask any questions but i can't help but ask that one.

Then the Q6600 is still better in some ways.
Performance might be about the same, but the Q6600 uses less power and thus is cheaper/cooler/more silent to run.

The Q6600 is the better processor. Overclocking it can yield some pretty impressive results. That cannot be said for the Phenom chips ATM.

Performance is fairly close, but the edge still goes to the Q6600. In addition to a slight performance edge, it has other advantages such as lower power consumption, less heat, and better overclockability.

Ok how about a E8500 vs a Q6600- which is better for gaming and which would be the better choice for the future also?

for gaming, it seems that a higher clockspeed is still more beneficial than more cores atm.

for future use, more cores will most likely give a greater boost than clockspeed (that is of course when you are comparing the 2 processors you mentioned as the architecture of penryn is not a HUGE improvement over the conroe)

I have the Q6600 and it's a slow terrible CPU with old 65nm technology. The new dual core E8600 45nm will beat the crap out of it since it can OC higher, better, smoother, and easier. King is E8600 Dual Core. Q6600 is a terrible chip and gets very very hot and crashes even with a good high quality cooler. Right now my Q6600 OC'ed to 3.6ghz with TRUE cooling and high quality fans my idel temps are 65,63,58,58.
NOW that is HOT. DO not buy the Q6600 it is a bad design and horrible. Get the Duo Core E8600 45nm. Q6600 is old 65nm. Total Trash.

Bollocks, kak og BS...the jest part of your post is babble at best...ignorance and lies at the worst...and the few valid parts are destryoed by your false statements...holy batman for a shitty post!

your in denial and believe your own lies, and you make absolutely no sense when you speak.

QFT, there is no shortage of Q6600 owners here, including myself and this is the first I've heard of such "issues" After all, the Q6600 isn't the most popular quad core chip becuase it a "bad design" or "horrible"

Those temps are not hot at all for 4 cores running at 1.2GHz above their rated speed.

Regardless of which chip you decide on, disregard this guy - he's simply wrong (and this is putting it as nice as I possibly can). He has something wrong with his setup and rather than resolve that, he just decides the Q6600 is an old terrible chip.

My Q6600 @ 3.2 idles around 40c in an ambient 26c room, my load temps are around his idle temps - with a TRUE120 HS. I didn't do anything special on my build, just did the standard testing/tweaking/adjusting you do for an OC - the stuff listed in any OC guide you'll find - and wound up with my great results.

I will say this - the whole "not much takes advantage of multiple cores yet" argument is thin. Windows NT->XP->Vista was designed in 1992 as a multi-CPU operating system. You can have multi-CPUs on one chip now, but the OS has been designed to make good use of those CPUs for 15+ years...

I am thrilled with my Q6600 - my friend has an E8400 and I swear he has core envy BUT he won't OC his E8400 - the crime of it all!!!

I have a Q6600 o/c'd to 3.2. It idles in the mid 20's & rarely gets above 45C under load. This chip is plenty fast, well designed & quite stable. The OP should definately consider the Q6600.

The Q6600 is one of the finest CPUs available at this point in time. For the price, it is very difficult to beat for heavy multi-taskers and even most gamers. The E8x00 series overclocks quite well, and has lower power consumption and intermediate clocks.

As far as the OP's question goes, I would consider a Q6600 before I considered a Phenom 9850 for gaming and rendering.

I have two of the Q6600s.

One is in my gaming computer and is OC'd to 3.3 GHz. I watercool it and I don't think it's ever seen 30C even under Orthos x 4. It is as stable as they come and very snappy.

In my son's computer I have a Q6600 cooled by an ArcticCooling Freezer 7. The OC is limited by the board to 3.1 GHz. He beats that computer nearly 24/7 and his temps are generally in the 40s; he loves his room hot, so I'd say ambient in there is 85F. he never has a failure, and his performance is also very crisp.

Given the prices now, for a 4 core CPU, you can't beat it.

Even though I agree the q6600 is a great chip, I love mine, those temps cant be right for all 4 cores under load. Even with watercooling.

He must have a E3 stepping they do run hotter and don't overclock as well as the newer G0 stepping. My G0 chip runs at 3.6ghz, idles at 27c on water cooling at 1.4v

I think you mean B3. There wasn't a E3 stepping that I'm aware of.

I agree with everyone saying the Q6600 is a great chip. I've been running mine for several months now (at 3.2Ghz) and it's one heck of a CPU.

if you hate it so much why not sell it to me then :)
