I am done overclocking my Quad core.
Who here has the highest clock on Air?

The heatsink I am using is a Scythe mine, with MX-2 thermal paste, I lapped the IHS of the processor and some of the heatsink base.

WOW awsome OC.....congrats ! i'm in the process of OC my Q6600 as well....i'm on a a U120Extreme w/ 4 gig of Gskill DDR2 8000 (default is 5-5-5-15).. my CPU's VID is 1.20.... can i ask a really noob question about OCing? i read thru the sticky guide a few times and heres the question.... It says when u start to OC, dont bother to change the memory timing, just try diff comb. of FSBxCpuMultiplier, and find the Vcore that'll give u a stable OC..... once you find the stable Vcore for your OC u can go back and lower the Vcore as well as push your memory.....whats the point of that ? can the memory timing matter that much ? also.... my VID is 1.20...does that mean it'll OC better than the CPUs with VID of 1.3? thx for the help..
 
very nice! My q6600 is a poor overclocker :( only 3.4 right now

Going to lap my heatsink and probably the IHS in the next couple weeks though.

I actually have no idea what the VID means or it's importance to an overclock. Though I think its like the minimum reccomended vcore for your chip, or something.

The RAM timmings, I have heard that when your in the early stages of overclocking you keep them relatively loose, so you can always tighten them later once you have found the highest stable clock. Though Im not sure, it probably has something to do with increased stability..

I will let this clock sink in for the next week or so, and if there are no problems I will try My timmings @ 4-4-4-12.
 
what are the specs of your G skill ram ? i brought 4 sticks of 1gig Gskill DDR2 800, 5-5-5-15....your is rated 4-4-4-12 ? was wondering maybe i should've brought the more expensive ones..
 
Personally, I'll be impressed when you can run a stable Prime95 or Orthos on that. Until then, nice speeds...I just doubt the stability.

Runing SMP Folding and playing games is all I care about.. And its has been stable for 48 hours on these settings so far.

If prime 95 says these settings are not stable and normal use and Folding says they are, then what you you think I am going to trust? A program that I am never going to run all the time, or things that I do all the time. Pretty clear to me.
 
Can you tell us all your voltage figures? Such as 1.2HT, NB, SB, etc. And ram voltages (2.1-2.3?). I'm having trouble pushing past 3.0ghz with a G0 stepping quad and active cooling on NB and ram.

Though I suspect the problem is more your motherboard than anything else. It was my problem, then I upgraded to the one I have now, which allowed me to get the current clock.

yeah i agree. i was running my q6600 b3 at 3ghz and it seemed to be running fine. games never crashed and it ran great, but prime said other wise. i would get an error 30 mins in. so it seemed to be okay but it really wasnt. so if your 3.7 is 100% stable just go ahead and prime it even if its only for an hour.

Until Normal use and SMP Folding proves me otherwise, I stand by what I said.

And I am not really trying to get others to change their stress testing means, all I am doing is pointing out, that in my specific case, I can do whatever I want on this computer, which includes days upon days of SMP Folding and playing games such as Crysis and COD4, and have no problems, even though Prime95 has indicated an error.
In the end I honestly do not care how you or anyone else tests their overclock.
But I will sit here and prove some wrong by showing how long my computer can fold and do this and that without errors even those these god almighty stress testing programs say my overclock is borked.
During normal use and SMP Folding, My cpu is not stressed to the point of Prime95, therefore I do not see why I should trust it when I will never run that program or any similar program for prolonged periods of time.
Two and a half days of normal use and SMP folding without a problem..

To the OP, if you're going to run it at 3700 then all well and good but don't come onto a forum where the defacto stability standard is prime 95/orthos and then proceed to try to get into a pissing contest over top speeds when you're not using that forum's standard.

May I remind you, OP doesn't have to do shit and the defacto standard means nothing here. [H]ard|OCP has no defined standard so take your pissing elsewhere, he has explained his position, if you don't like it. Shut up and go and read another thread.

My position, at least run stability test for some time. I'm glad it's stable under your normal usage as long it's not throwing off 7xB errors in folding ;) I fold too man.
 
Some of you with Q6600's mind sharing what batch #'s your cpus are?

I just picked up a G0 SLACR batch # L745A871 and was curious if it is a good batch to OC... I know cpu's can vary within a batch some, but a good batch can make the OC'n easier...

Regardless for 199.99 retail NIB from microcenter I doubt I'll complain much!

Running 3.0Ghz 1.21v 12hr Prime stable. Temps are under 56c full load.

I can't get into windows at 3.6 with anything less than 1.5v. Hell, anything over 3.0GHz requires more than 1.35v. I can post at 4Ghz @1.45v and I get to the Windows loading graphic at 4Ghz using 1.5v. My HS is not up to the task. My temps were through the roof at 70c+.

3.6ghz (400x9) @ 1.35v

Hottest core gets to around 55c under full Prime95 load (Small FFTs, 4 cores) with an ambient temperature of 27c.
 
I can only run my q6600 G0 at 3.6 at 1.5v (in BIOS, drops to about 1.40v) in prime95 at VID 1.2875v to have it run on prime95 for 10+ hours without errors. I have a TRUE120 and temps never go above 65C with ambient around 20-30C (weather in my room seems to change fairly rapidly with sometimes hot temps and sometimes cold temps). I did not raise the default voltages for everything else (MCH, ram voltage, etc) and run timings at 5-5-5-15.

However I can POST at 3.6 at 1.38v (havent tried lower, but will report if i am able to run lower) and play Crysis and surf the web without my comp having to restart. But if I run prime95, within a few minutes (and sometimes a few sec), an error occurs or my comp just restarts.

Also, I can get to the windows screen at 4.2 but had to raise the voltage to 1.6v (was an overestimate, not sure if it can post at something lower, but ill see) but knew it was not stable and would fail instantly in prime95. Since ive never needed the extra power, I never continued after that one attempt. I dont do any encoding or anything that really requires all 4 cores and all the speed that 3.6 can provide so I generally just have my comp at 3.0 because its the highest i can have my comp without having to increase the vcore (plus i can set my timings to 4-4-4-10).

Make no mistake about it though, when reporting my overclock I never report my overclock as over 3.6 because i know its not stable after that (my definition of stable: prime95 for ATLEAST 10 hours DURING THE DAY TIME). And i never report a voltage that is not stable as well.

Gonna push this lil chip over the weekend to see what it's capable of.

Those temps seem high for that voltage, was it extremely hot ambient?
 
Q6600 G0 running at 3.2 (356x9) 1.248/1.240V (idle/load) 32/58 (idle/load).
Antec P182 stock tri-cools all on low, TRUE w/Scythe S-Flex E. Stable 10 hrs prime.

I've never tried to push it any further than 3.2, since I almost never hit 100% usage even at that setting. Normal operating temps are in the low-mid 40s.
 
Your never going to hit 100% usage unless your running 4 threads... you will see a performance difference between 3.2 and 3.6...
 
can it night time, i like to use my pc during the day?

The reason why I suggest stressing it during the day is because sometimes night and day temperatures vary dramatically and so what may be great temperatures at night may raise significantly during the day time and may be dangerous for your comp. However if you live in a place where temperatures dont vary much during the day and night, then should be no problem stressing during the day.
 
I'm running my G0 at 3.6 1.4v bios(1.37 cpuid) doin boinc 24/7...temps max out at 52c.

running prime95 small they max out at 63c with ambient at 23c.

this is with a 780i board...I could never get my 680i to work at all. ended up RMAing it.

this is also with using low db scythe fans...1200 rpm/65cfm 2 in 2 out one on my TRUE. Im going to grab some higher cfm fans in a month or 2 and see if the added ariflow will lower the temps at all...if so, I think I might push for 4g on air with this baby since I have plenty of room to up the voltage.

If I can get the temps down 5-10c with my current settings then I would feel comfortable pushing up a notch and shooting for 4g 24/7.
 
I must have a shit chip. My G0 will do 3.6 but at 1.47 vcore, temps max out around 66c. Even at 3.4 I need to give it 1.43 to be stable. But at 3.2 it's stable with 1.35. 3.0 stable with 1.285. LOL

I keep it at 3.0 anyways. More juice than I need.

How are you measuring those volts? Is that true voltage to the cpu or just what your setting in the bios?
 
I have mine at 3.5 388x9 @ 1.485v bios. Could I lower my vcore down by upping my other voltage like the nb? Anything under 1.485v I get a rounding error after 15 mins on core 4, does not crash though.
 
1.485v in bios is probably some where between 1.385v to 1.435v to the cpu. Get everest or some other program and look at the actual voltages hitting the cpu... Everyday OC's are good up to 1.5 to 1.55 from everything I have read.

Also measure your core temps with the coretemp program. Its vastly different then what your mobo is measuring.

Prime95 stresses all 4 cores at 100% but there are very few everyday programs that will even utilize 75% of your cpu. Those are BIOS settings. vdroop on my mobo is around 0.1v most of the time. So, cut those numbers down by .1v and that's a pretty accurate true voltage reading.

I guess I can juice it up a bit more, but I'd like to lap the proc first. Temps over 60c scare me. LOL And I'd want to get some active cooling on the NB. Temps there are also high.

Yea I can get 3.6 with 1.5xxv in bios. The only problem with this is that my temps on cores 1&2 reach 72c. Cores 3&4 are like 8-10c below that. I then get this beep warning. I check my CPU beep temps and they are at 80c so I am not sure what is causing the beep warning? The system still runs and when I stop Prime95 the beep warning stops. I check all the beep warnings and none of the system component reaches those temps for it to go off so I don't know?
I use Prime95, CoreTemp, Speedfan, and HWmonitor. Anyone know if cores 3&4 are suppose to be much lower than cores 1&2. I am going to try it again later. It took me a couple days to experiment with 3, 3.3, 3.5, 3.6ghz. I will try to lower my timing to 4-4-4-12 once stable or lower if I could.

I suggest you all get the program called core temp. You need to be looking at the core temps not whatever your mobo says as mobo's tend to be off by ALOT!
 
L738A999 with a VID of 1.2375v.
I run my Q6600 @ 3.2GHz with 1.240v/1.232v(Idle/Full load).
The temps hover around 36-40 idle and approximately 55-62 load.

I can boot @ 3.6 using 1.4v but it's not stable. 1.425v changes that but it's too hot for my tastes as it's approaching 70 degrees on two of the cores.

The problem, my Thermalright Ultima 90 is somehow scratched pretty badly right where it's supposed to have contact with the CPU's IHS. I may have scratched it during installation but just can't recall. I've got to sand it down cause the scratch area is approximate 2cmx1.5cm.
 
I'm finding out that it isn't. My chip is 1.16, my buddies is 1.28 and he can hit 3.6 without a problem where I'm having issues.

I don't think vid is an important as some might think. It's more or less a starting point, but all seem to end up at the same place anyways, so.

I'm also finding out that not RMA'ing my 680i when they had the offer was a big mistake. 680i AR boards suck for OC'ing Q6600s and apparently 1333 is as fast as that board will take me, which explains all the weird behaviors I've been seeing when trying to OC this chip. I can't get into windows reliably at any FSB above 1333 with this chip. I couldn't get it to do 3.1Ghz. I can POST up to 4GHZ and even get partially into safe mode under 1.5v. I'm waiting for my place in the EVGA trade up queue for the 780i. I hear those boards aren't bad for OC'ing Q6600s. The board is back ordered and I'm 1071 in line so I have a bit of a wait. 3Ghz *4 ain't too bad (Who am I kidding, it's great!).
