Q6600 overclock ram issues?

I've got a q6600 that will be getting moved to a friend's pc sometime soon, but would like to overclock it for him before actually finishing the build. The thing is, I've been struggling with getting this overclock to succeed for over a year now, back when it was still my processor.

I've narrowed down a few of the issues. The fastest I've gotten it to was 3.2ghz and 3.6ghz by taking the fsb up to 400 and then syncing the ram, but with 8 and 9 multipliers, respectively. Both of those OC's worked fairly well, but they usually would encounter an error in the 3rd core after some time in prime95, which I've discovered is most likely connected to having my particular motherboard's fsb at 400.

The only thing is, I can't really get it to be marginally stable with any other settings. I've tried many different fsb settings, but they all invariably lead to a crash. I believe it's because my ram for that system (Corsair XMS2 1gb sticks) doesn't like the syncing that happens under other frequencies. I suppose my question then is does anyone have any idea how I can alleviate the ram's syncing problems? Are there any particularly goods fsb's and ratios for ddr2-800? If not, would I need to overclock my ram in order to have it sync properly?

the only things out of that whole post missing is your cpu voltage, ram timing, and ram voltages. all important things required for us to give an opinion on what the possible problem is.

btw how could you type Q6600 wrong in the title and your signiture but type Q6600 correctly in your post? o_O
 
Most likely because that trailing 0 on q6600 is a recurring difficulty for me, oddly. Updated that where it was possible.

CPU and ram voltages are both usually set to auto, but if I recall, the p5n-d typically gives a little more juice than necessary with auto. As for the ram timings, I eventually set them to their specifications, which are 5-5-5-18. The ram's listed spec is 1.9v, so I'll most likely drop it down to that specifically next time I get a chance to try the overclock.
 
I've actually got a P5N-D with a Xeon X3220, and it will flat out not overclock. I struggled to get it to 3.15Ghz with 1.45v, which was no better than the e6320 that it replaced. :/

You are correct in that the board will give it a bit more voltage than required, but I would go ahead and manually set all the voltages (I don't recommend more than 1.45v). As for the RAM, I would set it a bit higher, maybe 2.0 or 2.1 and see if you can clock it a bit farther than what you are now.

What does CPU-z say that the CPU voltage is while idle and under Prime? Have you pencil modded the board?
 
I haven't yet pencil modded it, though I do remember seeing a tutorial once on doing that to reduce vdroop. It'll probably be sometime mid-next week before I can check the voltage while idle and under load, as it's not in my primary system. I'm currently waiting on a gtx 460 to arrive in the mail from newegg that I can put in that system, and then I'll be able to actually do more testing on it.
