Q6600 overclock help

I plan to get a NEW cpu in the next few months but want to try and OC my Q6600 for now. I've tired to do it in the past but have failed and gave up trying to get 3 Ghz. I want to try and do it one last time.

What I've done/tried

Multiplier: 9x
FSB: 333
400FSB with a 8x Multiplier at 1.4 Refuses to POST
Voltage: 1.42 Anything less an windows goes to a instant BOSD and Prime95 fails on the 4th core and sometimes windows will restart even with this high of voltage.
RAM put it at 2 Volts and adjusted the timings no help.
NB:1.35
FSB Termination Voltage: 1.36
Vdrop enabled ad C1E and Speedstep disabled.

System is:

Asus P5Q-E
Corsair TX750W
GTX 275
8GB G.Skill DDR2-800 5-5-5-15 4x2 GB sticks

My Q6600 is a G0 stepping

I have a similar system... P5Q pro motherboard with Q6600/G0 OC'd to 3ghz. I've been running this setup for 2 years now with no problems. Ram is at 2.1V, as recommended by the OCZ guys.

Temps/cooler? Try and take out two sticks of ram. Leave only 2x2gb and try that. I just can't see even a dud q6600 not hitting 3.0 with a voltage boost. Mine will hit 3.2 at the stock 1.2 and I have it at 3.7 @ 1.33 now.
 
I have Q6600 at 3800Mhz in P5Q-pro for 2years @ 1.440v. I'm updating BFBC2 atm but I'll take some pics of my bios settings as soon as the update is complete and post them up here for you.

As the poster above said, 8GB (4x2GB) will put a lot of strain on your NB and will reduce potential OC. Your cpus VID of 1.3125v also suggests to me (I've tried 4x Q6600's) your max stable OC with good temps is gonna be around 3.4ghz-3.6Ghz.

I was running my Q6600 for a couple of years as well with a P5Q Pro.
all I changed was the FSB in the BIOS and ran an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro cooler.
I also had 4 sticks of 2GB DDR2 1066 ram.

I use a Noctua NH-U9B not the SE2 version

Idle temps at stock are around 38ish. At 1.4v they are around 62ish under max load until it fails.

Any suggestion what to try next? pulling two ram sticks doesn't change it.
 
disable the Vdroop setting.
Increase your Vtt by a notch.
Keep your VCore where it is.
Set RAM to auto and adjust VDimm to what the manufacturer said.
Disable C1E and speedstep.

My guess is the VDroop setting is killing your attempts.

I have a rotten overclocker of a Q6600 G0, but with 1.45V it will do 3.25 on an EVGA 680i all day long, with idle at 38C and gaming at 45C.

My NB and CPU are watercooled.

680i chipset is poor for clocking quads. Many have tried and fail to get 3.2ghz+ stable. I had P5W32-sli+ before P5Q-pro and this same cpu wouldn't do 3.3ghz stable, yet in P5Q-pro same cpu will bench vantage at almost 4.1ghz.

P35/45 chipset much better for clocking quads.

1.475 is more voltage then I'd like to run. It looks like your running Water. I'm running a HSF but a good HSF.

I'll try and disable vdrop and see what happens

Chilled air yes, directly from outside which is -7c tonight. I use a TRUE rev b heatsink.

Our boards are both P45 so I'm wondering why you need FSB termination so high? This will cause excess heat. NB also may be overheating, can you monitor NB temp with that board (no sensor on my P5Q-pro)?

Have you tried upping cpu pll voltage?
 
This is what I'm using right now. Windows goes to login screen and then BSOD of ntfs.sys




 
Here are the exact settings I have. If it's not listed, I left it as default (auto most likely). Try changing your dram frequency back to 800mhz. I didn't touch the NB voltage, and my processor is actually running at a lower VID than factory (runs cooler that way, haven't had any negative affects). I only see 60*C on the hottest core when running prime, otherwise it rarely gets above 54*C peak. It steps down to 2GHz at idle, which is nice.

Tired those settings and it wouldn't post. Used 2.0 on my ram tho. And used 5-5-5-15
 
You could try reducing your ram speed to the next lowest divider, as pushing 8GB of 800Mhz ram much past 800 may be part of your problem. Enable LLC (vdroop) aswell as this will prevent your vcore dropping too low. With 1.400v you should get atleast 3200mhz.

I set my ram to 667 MHz and increased it a bit above 1.4 v on the cpu.

It's never been this stable before. 10 min into Prime 95 and it's stable so far.

60c core temps.
 
I have my Q6600 at 3.0ghz at 1.18 volts

Your first screen shot shows your 800mhz memory overclocked to 1061mhz because you didn't decrease memory divider as you increase FSB, leading to a crash.

My ram is DDR2 800mhz too, I have it overclocked to 1000mhz with 2.0volts and 5-6-5-15 timing. GL
 
Well I think I nailed the max OC for my cpu. I think I just got a not so good OCer

IF I try and jump the voltage down 1 it fails on the fourth core so i put it up one and it works and appears to be stable at 3 GHz.

Also with 5-5-5-15 windows will BSOD. Changed it to 6-6-6-18 and it seems fine.

Core temps are around 66c

Any suggestions to try and get the voltage lower? If not then any tips on how to get a higher clock?

EDIT: It's still not stable. the 4th core failed after 6 passes.

Ugh any other tips?

You are correct.
The evga 680i is crappy, but it's the last S775 board I own and it's a backup anyway. It's been at 3.25 in this board for over a year.:D

I had the same cpu in a Gigabyte X48 board easily at 3.4 GHz on air stable as a rock.
 
Call g.skill and ask them if you have the correct voltage and timing settings for the ram. Like someone else said, make sure your multiplier is set so that the memory is still operating at 800Hz.
