Q6600 - Overclock - 2.9 Limit?

Q6600 2.9Ghz VID 1.325 Abit IB9 MB

I have tried and tired but I am unable to get this CPU to 3.0Ghz ....

Tried Raising Vcore, MCH, FSB ..... nothing ....

Highest I can get is 322 x 9. Have tried going 375*8 but no go ...

Does this sound like a bad MB or CPU problem ...

I have 6 systems identicial to this and all have no problems with this config.

This is the second Q6600 I have tried on this board (1st one also had VID of 1.325 and could only get to 2.8Ghz)
 
If you boosted the MB vcore, it might be the wall for the chip (or the board). Can it do 8x362? Can you try another CPU?
 
I can try another CPU. Was planing on doing that when i get off work.
I got 3 Q6600 in yesterday ... and the other two run at 3.0Ghz with 0 efforf on two identicial systems.

But this one system refused to do it ... twice ... with two different Q6600 with 1.325 VID ...
I guess I could have gotten two cpu's in a row with low overclock??

Gonna try with a known good OC cpu and see what I get ....

Also gonna try CPU with known good motherboard ...

That should tell me if we are looking at a bad board or bad cpu
 
You can easily tell if you're reaching the motherboards limit by lowering the multiplier to like 5 or something, than going up past 322Mhz which was your wall last time. By lowering the multi to such a low level you can eliminate the CPU being the limiting factor becuase the CPU will be underclocked. If the board is able to run at 322+ when the multi is at 5, the motherboard is likely not your culprit. If it still doesnt run, then it is the culprit.

Before I installed the Q6600 .. I have an E2140 @ 2.96 ( 8* 370 )

I know the Quads use a lot more FSB then the C2D ....

Is it still a good idea to do the FSB test ... or did my first statement rule it out?

If it is the CPU .. i am really unlucky getting 2 Q6600 that can't break 3.0Ghz
 
If the E2140 can run at 370fsb but the Q6600 cannot on the same board, it's unlikely that the board is what is holding you back.

My Q6600 isn't a great OCer either. My friend can reach 3.6GHz at the same voltage mine needs to hit 3.2GHz.

I guess I just got to low oc'ing q6600's in a row .... luck of the draw ...
 
i overclocked my q6600 easily to 3.2 by increasing vcore to 1.325.
I subsequently tried to go higher but was not able to boot at all at higher than 1430 FSB.
i tried small changes to fsb but nothing.
I read there are "holes" in the fsb where you cant clock at all.
I then jumped to 1520 FSB and froze after booting but at least was able to boot.
i then tried t 1530 FSB and booted with no difficulty at all!
SInce then i have further increased my OC and
I am now at 1600 FSB(3.6) with no difficulties.
strange how this works.
 
yeah FSB holes are common. thats a REALLY big hole you got cleve.

nice that you got it to 3.6 anyways, especially with the 1600mhz FSB
