Hello, i'm planning to buy a new computer (finally) and i am thinking of Q9450 but i have heard too much bad about it, and what i want is to be able to carry heavy applications fast aswell as extreme gaming, so OC is something i would point on. Which one is faster (when OC'ed) and how much each one OCs?

Thanks in advance,
BladeZ

There are literally 5 threads from the past 5 days about just this kind of question and situation. Go through the threads and check back over the past 5 days of postings (just click the arrow to go back a page in this subforum and read more, then another arrow, etc) and you'll see a ton of discussion already in progress.

Yet another thread about the same thing over and over again gets a bit tiring...

If you got the cash, 9450. Overall, the Q6600 is normally regarded as the better value. OC performance will vary from chip to chip. On average, most Q6600s will get 3.2GHz air cooled without a huge problem. Not sure on the 9450s, there are not enough around yet to make a solid assessment of that.

This question has not been asked anywhere near as much as "Q6600 vs e8400" so I don't mind answering it...

The best thing for you to do is look at some benchmarks and look at the prices.

The Q9450 is a faster chip than the Q6600, there is no doubt about that. Is the added performance worth the added price? That's what only you can answer after looking at the performance and pricing.

When i was running a s939 X2 as my main machine, I had my heart set on a Q9450, I was just waiting for it's release. As the day got closer and closer, the price of the Q6600 plummeted to $200 and knowing I can OC it to 3+GHz, I abandoned my plans for the Q9450 and snagged a Q6600 as it proved to be a very good value for me.

to sum it up, no matter what speed you get on the Q6600, the Q9450 will be faster at the same speed.

The Q9450 may require a more capable motherboard and memory when overclocking to high levels as its multiplier is lower, if you want to reach the same clock speeds as the Q6600.

that is true, but with the q9450 you do not need to pump as much volts in it to get the same overclock.

Volts don't mean that much if you need a different mobo or ram :p

Though lower power is certainly nice.
