So I bought an E7200 and tried to install the Hyper-V role on my Server 2008 box and lo and behold, the E7200 doesn't have hardware-assisted virtualization, I thought they all did these days, stupid me!
So, I'm returning the E7200 and was considering either an E8400 or a Q6600.
I like the low-heat and high speed of the E8400 - meaning quieter, lower fan speeds. On the other hand, the Q6600 is a quad but hotter.
I won't be overclocking as I'm going for maximum stability. Also concerned about price. I will be returning the E7200 to MicroCenter today and the E8400 is $149. The Q6600 is $179.
Everyone seems to be recommending the E8400 for gaming, etc...but I haven't seen anything about the Q6600/E8400 comparison with respect to servers.
I'm just going to play around with Hyper-V, not running anything mission critical. The machine is just a file server for me right now, but might run another OS on it - nothing serious.
Help me decide. Is the Q6600 worth $30 more?
