Q6600 or E6750

building my new rig, i will be overclocking and right now im down too two choices, either the Q6600 or E6750.

Do i really need the quad core? is it worth the extra 80?

I dont upgrade often as you can tell from my current system that I made into an HTPC...

so since im going to be keeping this system for approx 2 years think i should go quad?

Depends on what you use it for. If you're doing processing or simulations that can utilize 4 cores, then go quad. If you're simply gaming, the e6750 will overclock to 3.6Ghz easy and that should hold you over for a while.

As for future-proofing, theres no such thing, but the q6600 will give you the extra 2 cores down the road.
 
I would go for the Q6600 as more apps in the future will use it to its full potential. Also it's not far behind the e6750 in single/dual threaded apps.
 
I would go the quad route. Buy the Q6600 G0, and you should be able to get around 3.7 ghz on air if you have time. The E6750 can get slightly higher, maybe about 3.9, but either chip is fast enough, and 200mhz is not going to make any difference in speed. The quad will be useful as games in the future is going to use the extra cores to do physics processing that is more intensive than before, rather than using the Physx card.

Its a stepping that is known to usually overclock well. Im ordering a Q6600 G0 from clubit.com tomorrow.

Assuming 3.7 on a Q6600 is a bit much on air, even if it is a GO. 3.2ghz would be a more realistic OC. I would go with the quad.
 
Swap that psu for the Corsair 520w and the CPU cooler for the tuniq tower 120.

3.7 on air is a little too high an expectation. From what I have seen 3.4 is about the average for the G0. I've seen quite a few get 3.6 Ghz+ but at the same time I have seen quite a few unable to get past 3.4 GHZ. Just remember YMMV, since there are so many variables in overclocking.
 
Go with the e6750, get a cheaper PSU that is SLI certified and then get a 8800GTX instead of the GTS.
