Q6600 - Only recognizing 2 cores?

My dad used to have an E6600 in his PC. He just picked up a Q6600 from FRYs special. I installed it last night, however, Windows is only recognizing 2 cores/2 threads.

Yet, on POST, the BIOS states it's a Quad and has 4 cores...

Any ideas on how to fix this? We're running Windows Vista Home Premium and an ASUS Maximus Formula.

I was talking to Arcy, and he thinks I may need to repair the Windows install since we had a Dual Core in on install...

Thanks!

check your bios and make sure that all 4 cores are enabled. Now fix that and then go after your woman you like tonight!!

This should fix it.

Go to the device manager and remove the processor.

Then remove whatever is listed under Computer.

Then do the scan for hardware changes thing.

It should redetect it properly.

I went to device manager, under processor, there is FOUR Q6600...

I removed each one, said no to reboot, then on the last one, I rebooted. It found the processor, however, it's still only showing two cores...

What exactly am I checking in the BIOS? On POST, it reads "Quad Q6600 2.40Ghz Cores: 4"

In the actual BIOS, I didn't see any setting that would affect the detection of cores.

That's correct for a quad-core (as far as Windows is concerned, a quad-core is four different CPUs) - it would suggest that it is detecting four cores at some level at least.

From looking elsewhere, it seems like it's worth trying bcdedit. Start Command Prompt (as an administrator, if UAC is on - right-click, "Run as administrator") and type:

bcdedit /set numproc 4
