Q6600 OC problem

Kinda long, you can skip to the cliff notes.

When I first got my Q6600 (about a year ago) I immediately OC'd it upon the first POST of my new gaming system. I had already read that 3ghz is a safe clock with decent air cooling. Don't recall the vcore off the top my head, but I'm guessing 1.35.

Now fast forward to a week ago and I noticed from CPUZ that my Q6600 is mysteriously back at it's default clocks. I had been using a Gigabyte motherboard app to OC it previously.

I think "meh, time to re-OC it". So I set the vcore to 1.35 and the fsb frequency until I reach 3.00ghz. I click the "go" button (that applies the settings in the program) and I shit you not, I heard quite possibly the most horrible sound emit from my speakers. It was so loud my instinctive reaction was to cup my ears in pain and almost crawl into the fetal position. I have no idea what the hell happened, but it was an insanely loud shrieking sound.

Anyways, I quickly pull myself together and immediately unplug my computer, also hoping I didn't scare the crap out of my neighbors (I live in a condo). Amazingly my computer boots up fine. I figured the Gigabyte program is f'd, so I'll try to OC from the BIOS. No dice. After OCing in the BIOS it would reboot and fail to POST.

So I'm stuck, if I drop the vcore it will freeze, if I raise the vcore it will freeze. The most stable OC I have now is 2.5ghz (2.4 is stock).

What's going on?

Cliff notes- after a year of oc, q6600 reset back to default clocks a week ago, cannot oc it anymore or else it freezes. Tried oc in BIOS and through gigabyte app.

This and the motherboard failing to take your settings (and then just failing to apply them) are issues with Gigabyte boards. Its considered a "feature" that the board just resets your overclock without telling you. Never, ever, use the Gigabyte OC software app, I do not know WTF it does, however I heard heard that screech myself with an X-Fi, Im fairly certain it fucks up the PCI clocks and that screech is basically the card failing until the system locks.

Anyway... Completely remove the system from power for at least 10 minutes (unplugged form the wall), then use the CMOS reset jumper/button to get everything back to defaults. Boots once to make sure the PC works, uninstall the Gigabyte app, reboot again and try to apply your OC.
