Right,
i'm trying to overclock my q6600 but i have a weird problem.

This is my setup:
Q6600 G0 stepping
Asus maximus formula with CPU cooled by thermalright 90 ultra and a Scythe Kaze fan
NZXT lexa case with 4 fans, good airflow if you'd ask me
Bios version 901
Geil 800Mhz DDR2 8Gb
Antec truepower trio PSU
Got the mem cooled with an ocz active cooler covering all 4 dimms

I got overclocked for 25 % now , FSB 333 and mem on 667. I tried with VCore volts of 1.2 to 1.4
For example
BIOS 701

I used occt to stress the system. It seems to run stable but after 15 minutes my SB voltage goes from 1.17 to 5 volts ????
I read the voltages on Asus Probe, guessed that would work best as an asus tool for an asus mobo?
then i tried some info i found for the quads
drelax to 0 with dram booster disabled ai clock on auto or light , static read control enabled and i gave the cpu pll volt a bit more juice and the fstb too. PLL to 1.712 and the fsbt to 1.504.
Could you guys tell me what I'm doing wrong or ask me for more info if you need that to come to a solution?
The temps i'm running stable non overclock is around 50 degrees C everything
When overclocked, non stressed something above 50 and max around 60, NB and SB at 50. I think everything around 50, max 60 should be ok right?
I'm also thinking off getting some water cooling for the sb and nb, would that help a lot?
I wanna get 3Ghz out of this set :D

I'm now gonna try with the settings adjusted a bit too what was written on this forum, to overclock C2D and C2Q guide. But I doubt it'll do fine, as soon as i edit something the SB voltages keeps shooting up after 15 mins of stressing.

50 deg on NB is known to be somewhere near the limit before failure, at least on the SE version and since non SE and SE is the same when removing heatpipe i should say you are in the borderline of when better cooling is needed. You might need some more Vcore to.
Since you using OCCT you can add Everest as monitoring tool. That way i noticed that 52-53 deg on NB was my limit for failure OCCT and i know i had the right Vnb for 4x1GB, the anadtech review] of this card has a good template for 8x450 OC.
If you want better cooling i suggest the following:
For the SB a Thermalright HR05 SLI/IFX will be good enought, gave me a 15-20 deg lower temps with a quiet 80mm fan. WC of SB will not gain anything besides lower temps.
For the NB a Universal Swiftech MCW30 or a nice cleanlooking EK S-MAX will get you down, in my case were i use 1.63Vnb from 52 to 35 under load with the S-MAX, and thats before the AS5 has burn in the 200hours before it reach its best.
There is also some ugly and expensive(even if you pay with euro everyday)MIPS ones and some DD that fits the NB but DD has not made a good block in a long time.

it keeps hanging anyway on 400 mhz
I got it running at 366 right now with the voltage settings to auto.
I tried messing around with the voltages but that didn't work well.
I got my mem timings set to 5 5 5 15 to get it stable running with these timings.
Somebody some more tips?
I can't think of anything else then getting better cooling for the sb and nb.
Or can anyone help me with setting the voltages correct?
NB is running at 55 degrees now with a voltage of 1.5 and SB is running at 50 degrees with a voltage of 1.1, is that harmfull?

I have a similar set up but with a Zalman9700 so your cooling is way better than mine.
First set the FSB strap to NB back to Auto. I don't know exactly what this feature does but mine is unstable with it set anywhere but Auto. I was able to get mine stable at 9X400 or 8X450 running Orthos for 12+ hours but that was with a vcore of 1.5. Temps were around 62°c (ambient was very cold 12°c, 55°f) I usually take off the side panel and have a big fan blowing at the CPU cooler, but that's 'cause my case is crappy.

Thx for your reply
I get blue screen errors anywhere above 333 FSB
Could you post the rest of your voltage settings or are they on auto? My NB and SB temps are around 50 to 60 under stress and my cpu also about 60, so i think it's weird you have same temps as me but at much higher FSB.
Although my ambient temp is pretty warm :D It's winter out here and I have my heaters on! But I do have a neat cooling Case though, never seen the airflow unhindered like this.
I have the voltage settings to auto, disabled both spread spectrum and the other spectrum feature, set my pci express freq to 100, couldn't find the pci clock sync, so i guessed that was set alright
Maybe i need to set some of the voltage settings by hand? LIke give it a bit more Vcore?
Got another post from the net telling me with these fsb boosts you need more CPU PLL voltage and some more FSTB voltage.
Got the dram booster disabled with drelax to 0, ai twister to auto and static read control enabled. For now I'm running with every volt setting to auto, I did trie adjusting them or running the volts above, but that didn't work.
Further more i disabled C1e, max cpuid and vanderpool
CPU TM function is on and exec disable bit is also on.
FSB is set to 333 and my dram automatically at 667.
I tried to go higher but i get blue screens, even if I set the mem to auto or manually set the timings to 5 5 5 15 for example.
Can anyone help me a bit ?
I'll post the voltages that everest tells me

NB: 1.1
SB: 1.5
FSB VTT: 1.4
Dimm VTT: 1.1
Dimm: 2.0 (got Geil 4 GB dragon quad channel 800Mhz DDR2, think max voltage is 2.5, but couldn't find it correctly on the Geilusa site)

+5 standby voltage is on 4.8
+ voltage is on 5
+12 is on 12.2
+ 3.3 is on 3.2

Voltage CPU core is 1.3

SB and NB temps idle are 45 , stressed are 54 and 50
CPU idle is 44 stressed is around 60

So if i boost the fsb up a bit, I get blue screenies with these settings.
I keep reading ppl run the same rig up to 400 so I'm really wondering what I'm doing wrong :S
I wanna blas to 400 too ! :D Even 450 :D wehehehehhee
I hope someone can help this noob @ OC'ing! :D

I wonder if it has something to do with the 8 gb of memory you're using.

I am very interested to know if you get this to work out with this board, as I just purchased a G0 Q6600 with 8gb (4sticks of 2gb) G.Skill DDR2 1000 from the egg and am debating what board to use, the Maximus Formula or the Gigabyte X38 DQ6.

Try it with just two stick of memory (dual channel).

I could do that, although it is quadchannel. And not 8 like you said , but 4.
I'll let you know tomorow or two days after that, bit busy with work and stuff.
I already began wondering if it was the mem, but not the fact I had 4 dimms in it but the fact it was 800Mhz.
The motherboard it's features are awesome though.
Maybe it could also be the fact my NB and SB are pretty warm.
But most of all I think i have to tweak the voltages , tried a bit but i can't work it out.

Im using the ASUS P5E, which is basically the vanilla version of the Maximus Formula. Ur CPU Vcore is a bit Low.... i have mine set to 1.46 to get it stable @ 3.6

453*8 its also stable at 400*9, less stress on the ram, but once again, Vcore of 1.46

My CPU is the Stepping B Revision G0, but i had a previous G0 with a stepping that i cant remember, required up to 1.53 to the Vcore to be 15hours Prime stable. Hope that helps.

thx, gonna try as soon as i have the time. Would you happen to know if you made more adjustments then the vcore? Or is everything except the vcore set to auto ?

You can adjust more than just the Vcore. The other two options that are next in line on the importence scale is/are the RAM Voltage, and NorthBridge voltage.

Usually I add .2 Volts to the RAM right off and small, very small ups on everything else. Vcore is most important though..

Right, don't have much time to test much now.
Got it stable running with voltage of 1.5 and bus speed of 390.
My cpu hits the 70 and even once in a while the 71 degrees. I got the g0 stepping and 71 should be the max. But i read you can safely go to 85 even without having much trouble or lessening the time it'll run for ya :D
But I find it high though. My cores are running at 63 63 61 and 61.
The rest of the settings I didn't mess with, they're on auto, except for the things i posted above.
Right, gonna go test a bit more later on this week. For now it's running stable for about an hour with prime95. Should stress test it a bit more to see if this really keeps on going, but I have a good feeling for it.
The mem and FSBT and the PLL and the Dimm voltage are other voltages i tried some adjustments with but no succes then.
Maybe later on while more testing.

Those temps are way too high.... I would never allow mine to go over 60C.
And it doesn't. @ 3.6 Ghz Max temp is 58C on SMP Folding.

What thermal paste and heatsink are you using? What is room temparture.

Lower those temps...

Ultra 5+ Silver Thermal and thermalright 90 ultra and a Scythe Kaze fan.
And room is somewhere about 20to25 degrees celcius i guess. The MB is at 38 degrees.
I'm running prime95 to stress test it.
What can cause these temperatures?
should i put the cooler on it again and do the thermal paste again?
Or should I put the vcore power a bit down and turn the memory a bit up?
NB voltage SB voltage? FSBT? or anything else?
@ 333 Mhz FSB it goes up to 54 under stress
But in coretemp he says per core it's somewhere above 60.
And what about the temp intel gives you as temp, at their site, the 70 degrees for the g0?

that is a bit high for my likings too!! Wat i did was bought the CoolerMaster Hyper 212, it was about $36 canadian, and added a second 120mm fan (antec LED fan, not expensive) and my idle temps using Core Temps, is 42-45 idle, and 45-56 gaming, and 56-64 while encoding. I used OCZ thermal Paste. i have the Antec 900 case, and airflow is absolutly amazing!!

i will take a picture of my bios soon and post it so u can see wat settings im running mine at.
:)

Cool, but I don't think my cooler would be that much worse it would explain those temperatures, I think I jacked the vcore temp up too high to get it stable working while it would work on less I'd guess but have to jack up the Dimm voltage and some other voltages, well, at least I hope.
Maybe it'd be a good plan to redo the coolpaste, a friend of mine spread it on the surface but left some blind spots. Explaining it would crush the paste anyways and get it everywhere.
Maybe lapping the surface of the chip and heatsink?
Do you have it running at 400 Fsb too?

I personally wouldnt lap the chip....it completely voids the warranty. But i am planning on lapping the heat sink soon! after im done my exams. im running my CPU @ 453x8, with an effective FSB of 1812Mhz

The warrnaty is already voided by overclocking and not using the stock heatsink...

Technically it isnt. Cuz there is no way intel can prove or disprove that u r not using stock heatsink nor can they prove that u've been overclocking. the CPU itself holds no settings. and i dont think using an aftermarket cooler voids ur warranty watsoever.

my 2 cents

exactly what i was thinking, but i guess i don't give that much about waranty on a chip to be honnest.
But what about ur voltages? Could you post em so i get a bit of idea, cuz i really can't run above 400 without getting even higher temps. I can't seem to find out if it could be some hardware of mine, I don't think so though, it's good stuff! :D
Anyone else a good idea what it could be? Maybe try to get it running with multiplier on 8?

I editted some settings.
Put the vcore on 1.4something
the sb on 1.6 , in windows he said it was already on that
nb on 1.4
2.1 in bios on dimm but in everest he says it get's 2.2
disabled all the stuff like c1e, max cpuid, ram boost, vanderpool, cpu tm function, execute disable bit
the mem ratio to auto, it's running at 5 5 5 15, gonna try to set that back on 4 4 4 12, i think that is better if that works, it's on 2T
and i messed around a bit with my voltages and fans so the fans are all on max, he put some on 90% or something.
got the FSB running at 9 times 387
core speed of 3482.5
rated fsb at 1547.9
and finally i redid the coolpaste, although I don't think it helped much though, reached the same temps idle without the fan on.
In the MB he said the temp was around 52 degrees and felt the heatsink, didn't feel that warm.
maybe i can go edit a bit more! :D

Nice, I don't know how much more you will be able to get out of it though.
My temps on load hit 59C @ 3.7 Ghz currently.
And I think Ill stop there even though the Vcore is only set to 1.428 in CMOS..

alright, here's the deal.
As i'm getting too high temps when I clock anywhere above 3,3 Ghz, i'm thinking of buying a watercool system.
As I'm new to overclocking I thought of buying a complete system like the thermaltake bigwater or the tribe. With a bit of reading, I found out that those systems are mostly crap.
Now more reading brought to my attention that you can go nuts on what you can buy for what price with watercool stuff.
Here's a little bit I'm thinking about:
- I want to start cooling my cpu and my SB and NB (as my mobo has watercool entrances for those anyway) What kind of pomp should I be getting? I read that anything for Eheim, EK or Danger Den rocks. I was thinking of the Eheim 1048, but will that be fit to cool those 2 things and later on my graphics card? (thought innovatek was good too)

- What or how many or how big should my radiators be and does it matter from which brand of fabrication they are?

- The tubing, does that matter which tubing I take? And how paranoid should I be with the connection points.
are these things fine?
http://shop.freezinghardware.nl/index.asp?Pagina=00003&i=294&c=44
Or should I put some of these in?
http://shop.freezinghardware.nl/index.asp?Pagina=00003&i=1983&c=44

I got it stable running 3.5 Ghz, 9 times 388, mem at 777, now wiht vcore voltage at 1.45 and dram to 2.04 , in the hw monitor of the bios he says it's runnin at 2.14. Since I installed the new bios update, 907, the temps have dropped drastically, to 45 tops on stress test.
The rest of the bios voltages are on auto.
See above posts for the rest of the settings.

Subscribing.

I have been trying to ge to 3.8. But it seems 3.6 is the best I can do.
9x400
VCore 1.48, but I am going to start dropping it.
NB on auto jumped to 1.6. I set it to 1.34
