Q6600 HELP!!

Hey guys, I'm not sure if I did this right but I just got my Q6600 SLACR 2.4 ghz 8mb cache. And I installed it (almost of it) and I noticed that in the manual for the mother board it said apply the thermal paste, but in the manual for the CPU it didn't say anything about thermal paste nor did it come with any. I also noticed that on the top of the CPU it had this gray thing on it ... was that the thermal paste? Am I suppose to go out and buy some?
 
Have you ever purhased a CPU before???? Please explain what you mean by "installed it".
I'm assuming this is a retail CPU box, in other words, there is the CPU (the square thing with letters and numbers on it, in a small plactic sleeve; and a HeatSinkFan (HSF for short) in the box.

The CPU does not come with thermal interface material (TIM or thermal "paste") on it.
If you bought a retail package, the HSF WILL have TIM placed on the "bottom" or the surface that contacts the CPU once placed in the motherboard socket.

You will see three raised grey lines on the copper bottom of the HSF, thats the Intel applied TIM.

You put the CPU in the MB socket, lock it in, place the HSF, plug the fan in and you are good to go.

Please read the package instructions that came with the CPU, it explains all of this and has pictures.

If you purchase an "aftermarket" HSF, that manufacturer will provide TIM for you to use......follow the instructions.:D
 
Hi, are you using the retail fan and heatsink that came with the Q6600? If you are then that fan/heatsink has a thermal pad on the bottom that will bond to the cpu after a few hours of use.

If you havce a after market cooler then you will need some thermal paste to apply to the cpu. I like Artic Silver 5 myself, some may suggest other thermal paste. Or if you have a different brand then use it. But yes you need some thermal paste for the cooler if it is a after market cooler.

Ah, thanks I bought this from micro center and it had those 3 gray strips so I'm happy now =) Thanks guys, I'm not OC or anything so I'm going to stick to stock
 
The heat from the CPU will melt the thermal interface material (those three gray strips) and thus fill in any gaps between the CPU and the heatsink. The top of the CPU itself is the integrated heat spreader, where the model number etc. is printed.
 
Make sure the HSF makes good contact with the CPU and the 4 prongs on the fan "click" into the holes on the MB.
dont forget to plug in the fan to the header marked "cpu" on the MB
once youve placed the HSF onto the CPU and clicked it down, gently "wiggle" the HSF once or twice to make good contact.

start the computer and go into the BIOS, under "hardware monitor" make sure you watch the CPU temp for a couple of minutes. idle should be 20-30C, if your idle is >40C, take off the HSF (shut down of course) and reseat it to make better contact.
 
I'm getting a current System Temperature of 35 and cpu 39 with cpu fan @ 802 RPM

Is your MB in a case or open on a box or something??? If you have this in a case those temps are OK, if its open to air that's a little high. But dont fret, the danger point on these CPUs is well over 60C

You can also set in the bios to override auto or PWM and run the fan at a duty cycle of your liking.
Is that the BIOS temp or a software program like Coretemp??

I think that temp is OK and will improve over time as the thermal material sets up.
I run water in my system, so my idle temps on my Q6600 OCd to 3.15 are about 27C and under load rarely exceed 38C-40C.
Your idle can come down a bit if you crank up the fan speed. depends on how much noise you like.

I like to use Coretemp to check the cores.....its a little program you can download.
 
My case is open currently. I have the fan on auto, and it lets me select by volts or PWM no idea what PWM is. I was thinking maybe installed the Heatsink improperly ... So, I guess I will Give it time and see what it does?

Your motherboard is going to adjust the speed of the fan on the heatsink. By volts means it will drop the voltage to the fan, and that can cause some fans to be a little noisy. By PWM, means it will send a pulsed signal to the fan and will adjust the on off time of the pulses (AKA duty cycle) to control the fan speed. That requires a 4 pin fan connector, at least on my Asus P5K mobo.

For testing, you can set the fan to run at full speed all the time in the Bios. If you look, you may also be able to adjust the target temp that the system tries to maintain.

I'm using SP 2004 Something Prime .. to stress it and Intel Thermal analysis Tool to check it .. on idel its in the 40's and On load it gets into the 50's nearing 60 .... Is the tools I'm using good?

Should I reinstall the heatsink buy new thermal glue or something??

EDIT: The thermal thing only looks like its checking two of the 4 cores
 
that gray thing is probably a thermal pad which is a replacemnt for thermal paste but your better to put actual thermal paste on it.

Depends on who you ask, the specs say 71c. I've hit a few degrees over 71c for cores 1&2 while running some test and it still works. However I don't know if I would want to run it more than a few hours at that temp?

The standard around here seems to be Prime 95. Use version 25.6 from here as the one from the web site that comes up on the web search sites is not multi thread capable. The 25.6 version will automagiacally start a separate thread for each core.

If you are running stock voltages and speed, you are a bit warm, and have little room left for clocking. Look into getting some quality thermal grease, and try mounting it again. It does not take alot of grease. Most people put too much on and it just squishes out the sides anyway.

If you are using the stock Intel cooler, and want to clock, look into getting a better cooler.

If you are running everything stock, you are fine.

I would use Orthos to check the stress ability of the 4 cores.
Orthos can be downloaded, it is written for 2 cores but can easily be run on all 4 cores by manipulating the program in the task manager.

Use CoreTemp to monitor temps.

Both can be downloaded by a google search.
Go in the forums here to find how to run Orthos on all 4 cores.

Just remember, gaming and daily use will never stress your CPU like the programs listed above and Orthos will take the CPU to the limit, if its under maximum temp yu will be fine in everyday use.
 
Thanks Guys ... I guess once 2.4 becomes outdated .. I'll OC to 3.0 or something and invest in some really good thermal grease and a Heatsink Fan. I donwnload the recommended programs and will continue to use those for testing. Thanks again!! =)
