Q6600 G0 Won't overclock???

I'm pretty much ready to give up trying with this CPU now!

I simply cannot get it to overclock, the slightest increase in FSB and the computer won't reach windows. Temps are stable (38c idle, 45c under load @ stock), cooling is more than adequate throughout the case, only 2 sticks of RAM both set to factory settings when trying to overclock, and still no joy.

Last night i defaulted the bios, set the multiplier to 9x, voltage to 1.3, fsb to 1250 (around the 2.8Ghz mark if i remember). Nada.

If anyone can post some tips i would appreciate it immensely, as admittedly this is my first intel processor, the last time i overclocked was an athlon 3800+ which was a simple case of cranking up the FSB. Mobo is an EVGA 680i SLI, for rest of specs see sig.

wait what? 1280 FSB x 9 multiplier = ~11GHz.. That may be your problem

never oc'd a quad though, i may be wrong
 
gotcha ;)

set all to default, and then increase +1 FSB.. then try +5, then try 25.. and so-on

See how far you get that way..

Then around 2.8, 3.0 Ghz you may need to crank the juice up.

2.8 should be a cake walk
 
Nvidia chipsets can be harder to overclock with.

You will probably need to bump the northbridge voltage and FSB/VTT voltage.

They did, luckily it was fixed in a BIOS update.

Hmm never thought about the FSB voltage, how much would you up it by roughly?

As far as I know, the recent Nvidia chipsets (6x0i and 7x0i) are in general harder to FSB-overclock than Intel chipsets, all other things equal. That said, it is possible to get a decent overclock (I have my Q6600 at ~3.4GHz), but you'll likely have to live with higher voltages.
