Well I got in on the Fry's deal yesterday and built a new system, im using the P5K-E and im clocked at 3.6 atm. Im a bit concerned with my temps and vcore and i'd love to hear from the Guru's.

My idle temps are 48 48 43 43 according to CoreTemp, but ASUS PC Probe II and ASUS AI Suite are saying its at 53. My NB idles around 35 and it jumps to 50 at load!! I have AS5 on it along with a small thermaltake fan attached.

I have my VCORE set at 1.5 but according to CPU-Z, PC Probe II and AAI Suite it is 1.38 and drops to 1.37 under full load.

After priming for 5 minutes temps jump to 73 73 68 68 using CoreTemp and about 75 with both the ASUS utillities. This seems rather hot even thought it is a quad core. My cooling system is as follows, Tuniq 120 with AS5 and stock fan on max, 1x 120mm thermaltake exhaust, 1x 80mm cooler master exhaust and 2x 120mm cooler master intake fans. From doing a bit of reading it looks like 70 load on a quad core is okay but the idle temps are concerning me. Your thoughts please :)

You aren't going to do 3.6Ghz at 1.5v with just air cooling unless you keep your ambient temps at like 60F and have exceptional case airflow.

Either drop it down or go to water.

If it hits 73 in 5 minutes you may push 80 after 30, and thats entirely too much.

According to Everest (which happily coincides with both Asus Probe II and Core Temp), I'm hitting as high as 70C on cores and as high as 60C for the CPU.

So as long as you pass the 24hr prime stable test with those temps, you'll be fine.

My idle will be in the low 40s 40-43 (cores) with the cpu idling at 37c.

What do you mean 40-43 at idle and the cpu idling at 37? Im wondering why theres such a big difference in temp between the first 2 cores, right now im idling at 46 46 40 40, I know the first 2 cores are used more but a whole 6 degress difference? im betting If I was using XP rather than vista my temps would be lower.

temps in vista and xp are the same for me, only my gpu showed a temp difference due to vista using the 3d core more in regular windows. The cores will read higher because you are getting the temp of the core itself, while the cpu is the reading between the 2 cores. It's strange you are seeing a 6C difference between cores, as I type this I'm downloading thru bittorrent, listening to a mp3 in medial player and obviously using my browser, but from what I can see, I have my core's within a few degrees of each other, 45 for c2 (most usage, spiking to 10%, holding around 5%), and the rest jumping around 42-43 with usage in the 2-3% range. usually my c1 and c2 will read higher in temp, but were talking a few degrees more.

CPU temp is going between 34C-37C right now.

Ok this is weird, decided to pop off the side panel and put my house fan in front of the entire computer, I also set my cpu to stock speeds at 2.4 with C1E throttling down to 1.6, CPU-Z is also reporting a 1.1vcore and you know what my idle temps are?

35 35 32 32, I think they should be WAYYY lower. I wonder if I have too much thermal grease or if my heatsink and cpu need to be lapped... I have the Tuniq tightened all the way down also.

Im wondering if I should lap my IHS and Tuniq tower.. and re-apply AS5 and not tighten the screws as much as they are now..

Yeah that doesn't sound right. I got a Q6600 @ 3.2 vcore 1.3 and my idle is lower than yours. I get 34-34-28-28 (room temp reads around mid 70 F on the thermostat) around those numbers with a Tuniq.

Just a update, I lapped the IHS on my Q6600 and re-seated everything and made sure the screws wheren't too tight on the Tuniq.

My idle temps are 47 47 42 42 at 3.6ghz at a actual vcore of 1.408
Room temp is 77*F

Is this about right? side of case is also open.

at 3.6 my cores are idling in the low to mid 40s. Nothing wrong with that, my voltage is at 1.42. Check to make sure you aren't suffering from vdroop. If I don't have the vcore dampner setting on in my motherboard bios, to get a stable overclock I'd need a 1.52 setting which gives 1.48 at idle and 1.42 at load.

With it on it stays at 1.42 regardless of load or idle which really helps the idle temps.

The idle temps shouldn't matter too much, it's the heat equilibrium point of your setup when under load. If you are hitting >65C for the CPU and >70C for the cores, you have a cooling issue. I've found that anything >70C for the cores may not crash the whole system, but I can't get it to stay prime stable for long at those temps.

Looks like you had a feast at fry's black friday! I decided to stick with the Cooler Master Hyper TX2 which was also free AR for now but unfortunately it's not cutting it (as expected) for topping out a quad core overclock.

I'm running 9X370 at 1.38 Vcore and idling at 38-38-35-34 with C1E on so I think yours are as they should be with a nicer cooler (35 35 32 32). Mine is throttling down to 1.24V and 2.2 Ghz at idle and I'm getting 3C higher which sounds about right comparing our coolers. I'd be more concerned of your load temps jumping straight to 73C which does seem high for a Tuniq. Now that you're down to actual vcore of 1.408 and lapped, try loading it again. If it stays below 70C and you can prime stable, I wouldn't worry about anything else. You can just turn C1E back on to lower your idle temps if you care.

Not to go off topic, but have you increased the northbridge/southbridge voltage? I'm just wondering because I can't get my Q6700 stable at 3.2GHz. I've even up'ed the CPU Vcore to 1.4025V, and it still fails a 8 hour prime 95 test.

I don't think southbridge voltage will make any difference. I bumped my northbridge 0.1V from default if i recall. You also have more room to go on the Vcore if you need. I've run 1.45+ Vcore on C2D's fine, as long as you can keep the load temps down. Just don't try it with free HSF combo's like mine on a quad :) I'd be surprised if your Q6700 is really capped at 3.2.

Thanks for the tips, I didn't think the CPU would top out at 3.2GHz. I'm seeing Q6600 hitting 3.4GHz+, and this CPU has a higher multiplier. (10X) I'm not worried about the heat either, I have a thermalright ultra 120 extreme, with a yate loon 2000RPM fan on it.

Funny thing is I bought one of those and returned it later that day.... just wasn't cutting it, so I pulled out my old Tuniq tower and searched around for a hour getting all the mounting hardware..... hence me buying the TX2 in the first place.

Sorry; not to thread hi-jack!

I got in on the deal too and I'm trying hard as hell to push the chip on a p965 board.

The BEST I can do so far is an embarassing 2.7GHz on WATER.

The board is DFI p965-s w/ crucial ballistix 8500

I've tried everything! The system keeps rebooting at the Vista loading screen.

Is the p965 too dated to OC a g0 q6600 or did I just get a bum chip? My e6600 could do 3.465 all day on this exact board!

DFI P965-S GO stepping here 4gb ballistix 4 sticks

thermalright ultra-120 with a high speed yate loon

stock voltage ( 1.200 ) I got 3ghz prime stable overnight currently working on 3.5ghz@ 1.4vcore :) load temps is around 70c with 1.4vcore or mid 40's at stock vcore @ 3ghz.

I have 2 Q0 Q6600 with Thermalright Ultra 120 extremes. One is on an Asus PK5, the other a Gigabyte P35-DS3R, both in Lian Li PC70 cases.

Both chips are P95 stable for me at exactly the same speed - 9x375=3375mhz. I'm using a 1.5v setting in the bios, showing around 1.4 in CPUz. They idle in the mid 30s and load around 70degress (core temps). I could probably push the one chip to 3.5 or 3.6 with more voltage, but I'm not that desperate :)

With those results, I thought I'd screwed up somewhere. Seems that's more or less run of the mill, though. I haven't lapped anything - I'm too chicken to screw up that much hardware :)

P965 here and Q6600 G0 at 3.5GHz @ 1.4V super stable here (12 hour prime95 + days of use). I was all ready to upgrade my mobo thinking it didn't have the goods for a Quad, but she just keeps on surprising me. :D

i have a i-p35 pro mobo and a q6600 @ 3.06ghz. i think my temps are okay but im no genius

(37 37 33 33) temps at idle
and around mid to high 40s when playing counterstrike
i keep my vcore at about 1.245v

i want to get a higher oc badly but i dont think my psu can sustain the OC. u guys got any ideas?

I went up to 3.6 with high voltage, but it was more than I needed.... So I settled on 3.2ghz with all my cores running 30-32°C and under full load of 44-46°C. I can live with that, I think 3.2 is a good balance between heat/performance for me while running cool.....And this in in Texas heat....
