Highlights
  • AMD’s overall unit shipments increased by 8.4% quarter-to-quarter, Intel’s total shipments decreased by -2.7% from last quarter, and Nvidia’s increased by 17.8%.
  • Desktop graphics add-in boards (AIBs that use discrete GPUs) increased by 6.55% from last quarter.

Interesting.

I did not expect to see AMD shrink in the last couple of quarters.

They are still competitive in the mid range where most sales are.

Just being competitive isn't enough for AMD. They're at a significant brand and feature disadvantage. It makes sense that most covid gamers would go Nvidia, especially the people new to gaming where Nvidia has a bigger brand presence.

Nvidia mobile gaming has a huge commanding lead, AMD would need to have a significant increase of sells and viable products there to start turning this around. If RNDA2 mobile is more efficient than Ampere mobile for perf/w, AMD should be able to start clawing. Nvidia has a full lineup top to bottom, AMD had bottom to middle. Just having a more complete lineup should help.

Console gamers and PC gamers in my opinion are two separate markets. Those who been on consoles mostly for games have a collection of games, assets which Sony and Microsoft I am sure like to keep some level of compatibility so the owners of those game assets, even if most will never be played will buy the next gen console feeling or kidding themselves they did not waste $'s for games never going to be played. Same with the PC market, who will ditch the PC with hundreds of games on Steam and other places for a Console having virtually zero game assets? Except for Microsoft which allows some back and forth.

Jon Peddie counts mobile discrete GPUs as well together with desktop, not sure how Steam counts them -> I see no Pascal or Turning mobile gpus (m), so is the 1060 counting all the different 1060's including the M versions (very popular for mobile)? Looks to be the case as well as all Turing GPU's. Point is AMD will have to tackle mobile in a big way to start moving things more in their direction.

Steam measures which GPUs are currently installed, not which GPUs were bought in the last 3 months. Those are two very different things and shouldn't be compared.
Thanks, that was it. I was looking at the Jon Peddie chart as install base.
