I just recently put togethor a system with a 300 gig Maxtor SATA drive and it's running great, but I want to put maximize the efficiency of this HD.

I will admit until now I've never really paid much attention to my HD's, considered a crime by many. :)

I've read the sticky, but it still leaves me with well what should in my case? What kind of partitions do I want etc?

I will be gaming and modeling with this system most of the time, I'll need a good chunk of the drive just to dump media. 3Dsmax, maya, CS2 suite, and games are what you'll see me doing most of time.

I realize that I would probably see real benefits from a RAID setup or having the OS on a seperate drive, etc. But cash is very tight, so I'll be one HD for a while.

Really on one drive there's not much to be done. Use a small OS partition near the beginning of the disk, set a minimum pagefile size, defrag every once in a while.

A 40gb Samsung spinpoint p80 can be had for around $50. Not a bad upgrade. Nice quiet disk, sata, decent speeds.

Why a 40gb spinpoint when you can get a better performing 80gb hitachi SATAII w/ ncq.
 
Noise. That's about it; I was just pointing out that it's not all that expensive to add another spindle to your system.
