Ok, so pretty soon i will have enough left over parts to build a second box. I was thinking of using it to fold, or do seti @ home. Or maybe both and run them alternatly on different days... anyway here's my Q. I only have one monitor, and i know you should only unplug things when the computer is off. But i'm gonna have to connect a monitor to the box in order to set up these programs, then i want to unplug it and put it on my main box..How do i do this without damaging anything?

Can you fold or do seti@home with a linux? i know i can google it.. but i thought i would just toss this question in...

thanks

you have 2 options. get a KVM switch or use RealVNC

google for more info on each of them

You can hook up stuff to boot the machine and get things running and then unplug without hurting anything. I know folding@home has a Linux client, not sure about seti. Finding cures for diseases > finding E.T. IMO :D

I've done all three of the things suggested here when not having enough monitors to share around. The first couple of systems I had I ran with one monitor and was just really, really careful when unplugging the monitor. Once I had more than two though I had to upgrade to something and networking was not something I wanted to tackle. So I went with a 4-port kvm. Worked great. Still works great actually although now it is just the backup. Finally I took the plunge and tried to do some home networking. Which it turns out was a great idea. Now my lazy ass doesn't even have to turn a switch to access all the puters. Woohoo! :D Yay for lazy fat asses. Anyway, if you aren't networking savvy now may be the time to try it out. Have fun with it no matter which way you go.

Fold On!
