Hey ..some of the guys in the post your work station pic thread, asked me about a worklog for my desk mod I did. So I thought I might as well put it in here :)

Copyed from another forum I visit

Hi guys :p

As probably most of you know I’m modding my desk and building my computer into it.
And was suggested that I make up a thread about it ..So here it is ;)

I won’t go right into it and make this a work-log per say. More of a picture thread etc to show what I've done/doing.
But I will answer any questions, and if people have any ideas or would like to know something then by all means post :)

Ok ..

So most people have seen my desk in other threads etc.
Here it is here if you haven’t seen it
http://mywebsite.bigpond.com/pyro1970/systems/Pyros/1.JPG

An idea I have always had and wanted to do was build my computer into the desk.
Now I’m sure there would be 101 ways to do this , but for me the best way to start was to use part of a case.
And so my Lian Li came under the knife ( or should I say dremel ).

So basically I had to cut out the desk so the part of the case will sit down under it with the mb etc facing up.

After mounting the case into the desk. taking into account the thickenss of the desk top and also allowing the top plate (which comes later) to be routered down into the top.
Next was to cut out the hole in the desk etc.

At this point I had it all planed out on what I was going to do with the burners and the raptor x. And no idea on what I was going to do with the other hard drives or psu at this stage.

I had the idea of mounting the burners under the desk facing up pretty much like the case so they would end up flush with the top plate and pressing the button would have the cd tray eject up. Since they are not made to work like this, I would of had to mod the burner to hold the disk, like they can if they are mounted sideways. But in the end I was going to be cutting out to much wood and it would have weakened the top too much.

So I changed it to one burner mounted under the desk and when its ejected it lines up with a hole in the desk so you can access the burner. And the raptor x mounted under the desk so you can see the inside. ( I think in another thread that I showed one of these pics, some one thought that I cut away the top of the burner and you could see the disk spining away ...sorry but no can do :p )

Ok.. So I still had a hole in the front of the case, which you will see in this pic
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/2714/10ky5.jpg

I made up a plate at of aluminum and mounted two 12cm fans in the front to provide air flow to the mb etc.
Which was fine but I still had to make up some sort of cover for the front and find a place to mount some more hard drives.
Hmm after more time thinking about it, I ripped the front plate off and started again.

Should be able to work out from the pics what I have in mind ;)
Two 12cm fans with two hard drives mounted under the fans.

Mounting the fans etc into the plate.
And making up a cover out of mesh.

Basically that’s pretty much it atm. Tomorrow I'll be cutting out the holes in the mesh for the hard drives.

Update 23/3

Ok today I pretty much got the front panel completed (paint last)

http://s303.photobucket.com/albums/nn143/Pyrooryp/Desk Mod/Desk7/?albumview=grid

And also the hard drive holders with simple connect system. So I just need to pull them out or push them in from the front.

Update 13/7

Working on the top

And putting in the Psu

Update 2/8

Working on the top Part2, Raptor Lighting, etc

http://s303.photobucket.com/albums/nn143/Pyrooryp/Desk Mod/Desk11/?albumview=slideshow

Pretty much just had to glue the windows in to finish the top plate off.
I also used some magnets drilled into the desk and glued to the plate to hold it down and to stop it from moving around.

As you can see with the raptor light system, I used some smd led strips stuck to the inside to light the inside of the raptor up.

The power switch I used a metal switch with a led to turn the system on, the blue led in the switch is the power led. The switch next to it opens and closes the dvd rom and the red led in the switch is the hdd led. I have also put the dvd led (dvd work light, also changed it to hi/b red) in the desk so it lights up the perspex ring.

Update 3/8

When This weekend I finished up the desk mod by installing the in desk usb powered hub.

But I also decided to make up a headphone stand. But with the mic and output jacks the the ability to cut the sound to the headphones via a switch.

nice work man, tooks ome time but I guess it was well worth it.

awesome job. I didn't even notice the hard drive in the other thread. I would also be worried about hitting the power or rest buttons on accident. Any problems with that?

That is very unique and baddass... you may be onto a new product line here.

Stuff that in a jerker and you'd have a whole new business on your hands :D

I saw part of this desk in a different thread, i just never knew you had a pc built into it.

Thanks guys :)

No not at all..There is only a power button, no reset..and other opens and closes the dvd rom

Totally inspiring job! Thanks sooo much for sharing your work here.

Glad too. It might also give others some ideas to do something like I have.

I have entered it in a build comp that Thermaltake are running here in australia, So hopefully I might get something for my effort.

I've always wanted to build a computer into a desk and this thread is making want to do it.

Awesome job, it looks really good.

That is awesome. How much did it cost to build that?

/Mandatory 10k desk reference fulfilled. :D

Wow, just saw this. Awesome build, I have to admit though that the tought to do something similar crossed my mind more than once. And I had never seen thos belkin hubs, you can be sure i'm going to be getting myself one. Always wanted to have desk mounted USB ports.
