hey everyone,

Pretty much as title says, does anyone have any experience with any PVR software that will work with an 8500 all in wonder that ISNT guide + ? I'm sick of its buggy nature, high cpu usage, and BS in general.

I've heard some good things about myth, anything else out there ?

Thanks

Not a lot of people might not know PVR means Personal Video Recorder. There are some apps out there, but would cost money for a good one, around $50. I can't recall anyone off hand, check Divx.com because I know one is bundles with Divx pro, so they must have it under their software listings.

Why don't you uninstall guide+ and keep a shortcut to tvguide on your desktop?

I haven't come across anything better than guide+, even other PVR software will usually lead you to a website for listings, unlike how guide+ is standalone.

Just took a look at snapstream, and I have to say that overall I was extremely impressed with the functionality and the layout of their software.

However, as far as their "demo" goes I am fucking PISSED. This thing is LOADED with ad-ware if you don't purchase it.

All casino crap and a god damn search bar (though I use mozilla I went to use IE for windows update after installing this and was confronted with the search bar).

And much like divx it loses functionality even in the DEMO if you uninstall the associated crapware. And I for one do not intend on becoming one of the 43 million registered "Claria" (AKA Gator if you didn't know they changed their name and planned on doing an IPO....) users / bitches.

I hadn't run ad aware or spybot in quite a while on my machine recently, and after uninstalling the snapstream demo there was over 100 files found between the combination of the two programs !

Nothing makes me think negatively of a product more than crapware installed with it, and SO fucking much of it too.

Any other ideas ?

I'll second BeyondTV 3.

Just bought myself a copy, actually (fairly unusual for me).

Firstly, the program guide they use is fully integrated into the '10-foot interface' (font and layout set up to be easily used with a remote wonder, for example, from across a room).

Secondly, whatever service they have actually CORRECTLY LISTS THE CHANNELS. Stupid, I know, but Guide+ manages to omit half a dozen stations (including Comedy Central!) from our local cable lineup (yes, I've tried both lineups available in my area from them - neither worked).

Plus....coming from ATI's MMC, especially....the number of options you have is bewildering. If you want low CPU usage, you can have it record to MPEG2 format (VERY low CPU usage) initially. It has a feature it calls 'showsqueeze' where you can configure it to, during an off time, re-compress what it recorded into a more portable (or storable) format, like WMV or DIVX. Again, this is all configurable using the '10-foot interface'.

Myself, I have the CPU cycles to spare, so I just let it encode in WMV format on the fly.

It also has a cool feature that ATI sort of just introduced: ATI's 'Eazyshare', which only works with All-In-Wonder servers and ATI card clients! BeyondTV has an option (on by default) to be a streaming server, too! Client PCs don't have any requirements at all - no special software, nothing. They just browse to the IP address of the 'host' and an Internet Explorer window will open with the LiveTV info. If the host isn't recording, the remote can also change channels.

Sadly, the channel guide on the remote must open in a seperate explorer window - much like Guide+ now. Still, for a client? That's not bad!

Finally, their support forum is actually moderately helpful and the developers post there from time to time (MUCH better than ATI's MMC).

There is a free 21-day trial, and it includes an account with their guide service - so you get the absolutely full, nothing-is-hidden, complete, package to run through.

You downloading the right thing?

There is no ad-ware? In fact, I'm 100% sure of that as I just recently finished the trial period myself.

The file you should have downloaded is:
BTV_V34_WEB_INSTALLER.exe

And it will pull the distrobution down and run it. No ads. It IS the full version, just time limited.

Thought on the ad-thing....

You didn't, by any chance, download DIVX itself, did you?

DIVX includes ad-ware. LOTS of ad-ware. Unless you buy it.

BeyondTV does not. And it works just fine without DIVX, if that's what you choose to do.

Hmm, well a whole bunch of ad-ware popped up after I installed the beyond TV demo and rebooted, and i SWEAR I didn't install anything else during the last reboot > reboot from installing beyond tv.

Interesting, that is truly quite bizarre then if there really is no ad-ware contained within, honestly their website was pretty slick looking but I was very put off by the adware thing, if it in fact was some other bizarre occurance then I guess I'll try downloading the installer for beyond tv again and reinstalling.

Thanks for the support on that issue, as i was pretty heated about the entire thing since beyond did look pretty hot.

I'll give it a shot. updates as events warrant

I'll also vouch for BeyondTV. I really haven' t had a problem with it in the year that I've been using it. Another really cool thing about it is if you have an ATi All in Wonder, you can stream live tv over your network (and Internet if you have the upstream bandwidth) so you can watch tv on any other computer (or handheld too, I believe) connected to the network.

I use it with an ATi 8500 All in Wonder and a Hauppauge PVR250. Plus their forums are full of helpful peeps too.

Despite the fact that I am liking the BeyondTV3 client so far, I also got flooded with crapware when I installed it. Casino games, Lycos sidesearch and a few others

I have no idea about that. I can't find anything on their website that mentions and adware -- even in their forum. I don't have an extra pc at the moment to install the trial on either.

Also, they have another nice feature called ShowSqueeze that, with the 3.4.4 version of BeyondTV, utilizes a DivX plugin to transcode the original media file. It's pretty sweet, I think.

Well, #1, there IS no 'BeyondTV3 client'. It's a server-side only program. The 'client' is just browsing to a web page hosted on the server.

#2 I just tried it again with the trail. Again, nothing.

Are you SURE you are downloading it from the right place?

This is the link you want to follow.

What you want to download is 'Beyond TV 3 Trial'. Don't download anything else from their site, certainly don't download and install Divx Pro trial (spyware city!).

There shouldn't be any problems!

I definitely downloaded the beyond tv trial, and definitely did NOT download divx pro adware supported.

Either way the second time that I downloaded the trial it worked fine no BS ad-ware, but the first time I did it there was an additional window something like updating microsoft ODBA or something to that effect and THEN when i rebooted I got a ton of ad-ware.

Weirdness.

Anyway like I said second time seemed to be the charm, though I SWEAR I didn't do anything different (other than apply some windows update patches).

It does seem to be working well though. Nice piece of software, I might actually buy it :)
