PVC pipe cement...

I'm building a large outboard reservoir/pump combo for priming my relatively small loop. The best thing I can come up with on the cheap for the reservoir is a 4"dia piece of PVC pipe with a cap glued on one end (the "bottom").

I'm not sure what to use to glue it on. I don't want to use anything that might react with whatever fluid I use (probably just DI water and biocide, but I might change my mind.) I've got some PVC cement, the kind with the purple primer, left over from a plumbing protect. That stuff should be okay, right...? I mean, it's good for carrying drinking water, anyway. Anyone recommend something different?

I would suggest using CPVC. It is designed for high temp and drinking water!

Regular PVC should be just fine.

Regular PVC is rated for drinking water.. just an FYI.

Regular PVC is generally used for the cold supply to a house, while the CPVC is used for hot water only.

CPVC is more brittle than PVC as well.

I very highly doubt that a water cooling loop in a computer is going to get anywhere near hot enough to have any negative affect on regular PVC or PVC cement.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not particularly worried about PVC/CPVC, is this is a filling rig only; the water in this res will never get up to operating temperature.

My loop is very compact and only has a tiny res that's integral with a rad/pump. It's very inconveniently placed for filling and bleeding. This outboard rig I'm building will connect via QDC fittings to prime the loop with a cheap aquarium pump, then I'll run both outboard and inboard pumps together for an hour or so to get the bubbles out.

The only thing I'm concerned about is the cement for affixing the cap. Should I use a silicone sealant instead? I just don't want anything nasty leaching into my coolant.

Just let it cure fully per the instructions on the PVC cement and then rinse with water afterwards. If you are especially paranoid, you can use soap as well.
 
PVC cement is not a glue it's a solvent. It "melts" the PVC then you push it together. All of the polymer spaghetti strands intertwine then the solvent evaporates leaving behind a solid mass of continuous plastic.
 
I used splitters for my parallel loops out of PVC for years and never had an issue from the PVC cement. bigger issue is getting a fitting to seal in the PVC. it is relatively thin wall and curved. took a ton of epoxy built up around the fitting for it to finally seal. once it did however, it worked flawlessly for years. only replaced them because I went to combined inlet/outlet manifold out of Plexiglas.

Standard primer and glue will be fine for water cooling. Speaking from experience many years ago.
