ok, im doin a mod,a nd i need something to fill in some holes in my case...something like wood putty maybe? i am going to put waxed paper on one side, then the "goop" on the other and let it dry, then peel of the wax paper....what would work for this?

I have a few questions concerning bondo...

Would it crack/break if the case becomes slighty less "firm" (if the case warps slightly when carrying, or similar situations, etc)

If done correctly, would you notice after painting?

Would it "die" over time and eventually come out?

Is it 100% permanent unless I use force to remove it?

I've heard that bondo is not the perfect solution but that using a fiberglass body filler works better becasue is is more structurally sound. Pearsonally I'm going to be using fiberglass on my case mod.

There is Bondo with fiberglass. Oh, and that depends on what you're doing. You don't need strength if all you're doingis filling in a gap or a hole.

I dont want the bondo to fall out of the hole though, then that would require completely doing it again with something else. I want to fill in holes as well, but want something permanent.

Bondo isn't going to fall out of the hole. To answer your questions from the previous post....

If it warps slightly, probably not. Fiberglass reinforced bondo would definitely not.

No.

No.

Yes.

Cool beans, will buy some bondo tomorow and try this out. Ill let you know how it goes.

ok, cool..thanks u guys! where can i get bondo at, and what are some "rip off's" of it? small town here so i might not be able to find the original

There are many different brands of body filler and Bondo brand isnt always the best. PPG makes very good body filler but for your needs just buy the cheapes brand there is. And dont try filling any very large holes as stress on the edges may crack the bondo.

It is quite strong however, but better safe than sorry.

I wouldn't suggest bondo if you are worried about the integrity of the case. If the case is going to sit still and not be disturbed too much then sure. Go to your local auto body shop and ask what they use. More than likely it's made by PPG.

Make sure when you fill your hole too that you rough up the surface to allow the filler to have something to bond to.

Something I learned you want to do as well is slightly dent the area around the holes you are filling in order to allow the filler to be thicker around the hole. It will keep the area from cracking. You will see automotive body guys doing this when covering up holes in vehicles left behind when emblems and trim is removed.
Lightly tapping a phillips head screwdriver around the hole will do the trick.

well, it wont have to be very strong..i rarely, if ever, move my case.... ill go hit up the shop today..need some spray paint and clear coat and this..thanks :) i fi paint it will it look different then the metal? im going to sand it all down some so it's all flush but..yeah :)

I needed to fill a bunch of little holes in the side panels of my Antec case (about 250 1/8 inch holes on each side) and I had a bunch of epoxy. So I covered them with masking tape on the back side, then filled them all with epoxy (used an old credit card to apply it). The when it hardened, I just peeled off the masking tape (came off real easy). Had to do one more application because of a little bit of shrinkage, and it turned out really well.
I even filled in the floppy drive hole on the front bezel the same way (although I taped the front and filled it from the back).
However you do it, make sure you sand it ABSOLUTELY SMOOTH, cause once you paint it, any imperfections will stick out like a sore thumb!

As for painting where you filled, just make sure you give it a few good coats of primer and the former holes will be invisible.

Just make sure you don't use "5 Minute Epoxy", unless you work really fast!!!!
5 minute doesn't mean you have 5 minutes to work with it, it means it sets in 5 minutes.
5 minute = slow superglue!!:D

hehe, well i tried it, didnt like how it looked with epoxie, so i just got back from biking to napa...got some MICRO LITE body filler, 600 grit sand paper, and some clear coat :)

How big are the holes? If they are more than about 1/8" diameter then it might be a good idea to put a permanent backer plate behind the panel and then fill that in with the bondo. I wanted to get rid of a stupid fan hole in the side panel of my case so I JB welded a thin piece of aluminum to the back side of the panel and then filled it in with bondo. Bondo is for filling, not for creating. And definately be sure to get it sanded down sufficiently. I get impatient so I didn't get mine sanded as well as I should have, and now you can see the spot if you hold the panel up to the light just right.

they are slits kinda...about 1/8" thin, and 1.5" long.. its been filled, dried, sanded and painted...you can see tiny indents but only if u hold it perfectly i dont even see them :)
