Putting together mATX sys for parents

Hey, whassup everyone! I haven't been to [H]forums here in quite a while (back when I built my own rig). But now i'm back, and probably with plenty o' questions too.
Story goes like this:

My parents need a new computer. Their current system is an old piece of junk. 500mhz P3, 128mb ram, etc. It sucks pretty badly (why do you think I built my own? ;)). They're finally getting to the "we need a new computer" stage though, which is why they've called on me to build one for them. I started thinking about what they'd need, and what some problems would be. One of the problems is space - currently their computer desk is overflowing with crap (printer, scanner, tower, monitor, phone, god knows what else...). So I figured, hey, a mATX case would be perfect for them! So I dug around at NCIX (since i'm Canadian) to start roughing things out here. The two things they'll use their computer for is the internet, and the Sims 2. Yeah, my sister and mother are hardcore fanatics *sigh*. So as long as it can handle the Sims 2 (and undoubtedly the dozens of expansions) it should be good. It will have to last them for a few years though, since they probably won't upgrade for quite a long time (their current computer is like 3-4 years old I think).

So here's what i've been thinking so far:

Antec Aria case, w/ 300wPSU
I've noticed this case seems to be fairly popular, so it seems like a good choice. Plus its so very sexy! :D
My big concern is how it handles heat. I've heard it doesn't ventillate so well with a video card in it (even with the PCI blower). Is there any room to drop in a spare 80mm or something?

Athlon 2600
Should be fairly sufficient for their needs. I've had pretty good luck with AMD's, so i'm considering overclocking this one slightly. I think i'd shoot for about 2ghz (10x200), mostly for the faster FSB. Assuming she can handle it anyways. I probably won't be able to con them into buying an aftermarket HSF, so this would have to be done on the stock fan in that cramped little case. Think its possible? Our basement is usually pretty cool, even in summer...

Motherboard...?
Here's where i'm completely up the frikkin creek. I've looked at a couple different mobos, but I just can't decide. Basically all its got to have is onboard audio. LAN would be nice, but not nessecary (since i've got like 6 spare NIC's in my parts bin, yeesh). Something that supports a 200mhz FSB would be nice too, for obvious reasons. Onboard video isn't needed, but it seems to be standard on damn near everything. USB is pretty much a given on any mobo too. Firewire isn't needed though (i've got firewire on my system... haven't used it once). Otherwise, i'm open to suggestions. Based on my past experiences, i'd lean towards an nForce2 chipset, so I was looking at the ASUS A7N8X-VM. I've got a A7N8X-Deluxe, so i'd be right at home here. Only thing is, i've seen lots of people complain about parts compatibility with the board. Maybe they're just idiots though, I don't know. The only other mobo's that've caught my eye so far have been the SOLTEK 75MIV2-L because of its price (i'm not a fan of VIA chipsets though), and the SHUTTLE MN31L since its an nForce2 (and I recognize the name). But like I said, i'm completely open to suggestions here.

2x512 SAMSUNG DDR400 RAM
Just something cheap and plentiful, since I don't plan on pushing the FSB any faster than PC3200 speeds. I'm just worried about compatibility issues, since i've never used cheap(er) ram. I'm a Corsair man, through and through, but I just can't justify spending that much cash on memory that'll never be pushed.

RADEON 9600XT 256MB
Should handle the Sims 2 nicely, especially with the quarter gig of memory. Nothing smoking fast, but it should suffice for the little bit of gaming duty it'd see.

LITEON DVD+-RW (8/4/8/4, 40/24/40)
Since the Aria only has one 5" slot, I figure its best to go all out and get something that'll pull both read and write duties. I've always liked LiteOn drives, and I hear this one has the ability to be firmware modded to being dual-layer capable. Plus its nice and cheap.

All else
Everything else is pretty much covered. I know where I can pick up a nice 160gb Maxtor HD for cheap, since I just bought one myself two days ago :D. Their monitor works fine for now... I can always look at getting them an LCD later on. Mouse works, keyboard works (could use a cleaning though). Might need new speakers, but any cheap old 2.1 system will do for them. They've already got a UPS (my old one), a scanner, and a printer (the legendary BJC-4000 series... its like 8 years old and STILL FUCKING GOING!! LOL!). So yup, just the basics for today.

Anywho, feel free to drop a comment or two to help me along here. Some mobo suggestions would be especially handy. I'll talk things over with my parents and see what all I can get them to agree to. So far this system is weiging in at around $1100ish CDN, which is probably a good ballpark price for them. But we'll see how things turn out.

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any advice you guys can spare me :)

Antec Aria case, w/ 300wPSU
This is pretty much the nicest of mATX cases, and will cost you accordingly. It's very tasteful looking, and the layout is for the most part well done. Just about every review I've read has mentioned heat issues (the solid construction of the case does very well in reducing noise, but doesn't do so well in ventilating the case). The Tech Report has a nice writeup on the case, here's the temperature page: http://tech-report.com/reviews/2004q2/antec-aria/index.x?pg=7.

I built a mATX system for my brother, and used this case http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-190-003&depa=1. While it's not as stylish, and though it does suffer from the blue-LED-as-laser issue, it seemed to me to be the next-best option. Also, I didn't feel bad at all about using an 80mm holesaw to ventilate the case panel directly above the processor. Newegg has some nice slim cases available as well, if you're into those.

Athlon 2600
Since heat may be an important issue, why not go with a mobile Barton-core XP? They can easily hit 2GHz while undervolted.

Motherboard...?
nForce2 is the way to go. I used the Biostar M7NCG 400, which wouldn't quite get to 400 using the cheap-o memory I bought for the system, but is an otherwise excellent choice as far as features go. Still managed 2.2GHz, though, so my brother didn't complain. The Asus seems like a nice board (like almost all of their boards); so does the Shuttle.

An interesting thing about the nForce boards with integrated graphics processor: if you put an nVidia graphics card in the AGP slot, you can continue to use the onboard GeForce 440mx as a secondary adapter. In the case of the Shuttle board, it has 2 VGA ports, so you could theoretically have support for 4 displays if you added a standard AGP card. Your family might not need this feature, though.
Edit: The Chaintech board in this category sets itself apart by having s-video out onboard.

2x512 SAMSUNG DDR400 RAM
Seems ok to me, but it couldn't hurt to watch for specials on better stuff.

RADEON 9600XT 256MB
Slightly beats out the nVidia 5700 cards, but is currently going for about $50 more. It's your call, either card will be fine.

LITEON DVD+-RW (8/4/8/4, 40/24/0)
Seems like a logical choice.

All else
Looks good to me.

Looks like a really good system, the graphics card is probably a bit of overkill but I'll most likely keep em happy for years to come.

I have the Aria case, MSI K7N2GM-L MB, 2500XP, 9600XT 128, DVD+-RW and a gig o' ram and I love it. After 12 hours straight of gaming(god I need a life!) the proc is running about 42c with the stock HSF with AS5. I replaced the rear fan with a Bloo LED one running at 7v. no extra ventilation holes.

Oh yeah, I running the slot blower too. (as I type this the Proc is at 39c and the case is 29c)

Go for it, the Aria case Rocks!

For the money, go with a 128mb 9800-series card. It will be faster because it will have twice the pipelines, and the 9600xt isn't really even fast enough to use 256mb effectively (check the benchmarks - the extra 128mb has almost no impact on performance). My advice would be to buy a Sapphire 9800se (the one with a 256-bit memory bus and the memory in an "L" shape) for around $120 and soft-mod it into a 9800pro.

Sorry for the bumpage, but i'm just about ready to order and this is what i've decided on:

Case: Antec Aria
Mobo: ASUS A7N8X-VM
Proc: AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Mem: 2x Samsung 512MB
HD: Maxtor DiamondMax 9, 160GB
GFX: Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256MB
DVD: LiteOn DVD RW 8x4x
Speakers: Logitech X-220 2.1

Total comes to about $1119 CAD, plus tax and shipping (probably another $150 or so, maybe less) which my mom seems to be pretty pleased with.

{Edit: Oops, i'm a moron. It's more like $1064 after all the little rebates. Gotta love fall sales!}

Oh, two things to respond to as well.
One, I looked at the 2500XP-M, and yeah it was a bit cheaper, but I think i'd rather play it safe with a computer I won't always be around to tinker with. There's never a guarantee as to how well a chip will OC, and i'd be taking a bit of a risk trying to find a HSF that will be a) cheap, b) reliable, and c) fit. I mean, $10 isn't much when it means getting a proc that WILL do 2ghz reliably and one that MIGHT. If this was gonna be my system... maybe, but not my parents system.
Two, the place i'm ordering from doesn't carry 256bit 9800's anymore :(. I dug a little, but they're getting hard to find, so I said fuck it. Oh, and the difference between the 256mb and 128mb 9600XT's is only like $20 canadian right now, so i'm gonna splurge. Especially since the primary game will be the Sims 2, which I already know from my computer is texture heavy... like a hairy fat chick  (sorry :p ). The extra mem might help in this case (especially since my parents won't mind running at lower resolutions).

Anyways, just wanted to thank ya's all for the little bit of input. All thats left to do is rip things past my parents one last time, get the legendary "mommies credit card" in my posession, and order. OH! I have to decide what i'm still getting for myself too. Hmm... 2 gigs of ram maybe? :D

Thanks again everyone!
