Putting drives to software RAID

I'm finishing a few projects and on my secondary pc I'll be upgrading the SSD from 256 to 480gb and installing a fresh copy of Windows 10.

In addition, I'll be putting 2x 4TB seagate NAS inside and doing RAID 0 via sofware. Would it be correct to think that the best time to put them is during the installation of Windows 10?
 
With Intel you can set them up later through the RST tray.

Are those video raw files important? If not backed up trusting a 4TB Seagate is risky.

If you have time to wait raid1, if not I'd get two more and do 10.
 
Well I'm going to either get 2x 5tb and backup to 2x 4tb externals or get 2x 4tb to backup. They're usually project files
 
But you guys had me thinking. Maybe I'll get 4 and set up raid 0. Or would raid 3/5 be better? I've heard bad things about Raid 5.
 
In my experience with setting up software RAID, you have to initially change the bios mode from AHCI to RAID. Then you install windows. After installing windows, you then boot up and Hit ctrl+I when prompted and from in here you create the RAID array. You then boot into windows, go into RST, and then create the RAID 0 drive there. Finally go into disk management and turn on the drive.

That is what I had to do last time I did it on a z67 board. Not sure if it is different now.
 
Correct, stay away from RAID 5.

6x3TB 7200rpm in a RAID 10 works good for your workload. Faster than 4x4, and near the same cost.
 
No note if using a dedicated card which are generally hardware vs the built in Intel firmware/software.

Intel allows only 4 drives max for raid 10 from what I've read in their docs

You can set up raid later instead of pre-OS if the system is set to raid ready.

Changing from ACHI to raid later borks the system.

If you have a gigabyte board they have a slick program that does allow this and won't bork it.

I tried it for fun when I was first installing and it worked without issue.

I run two sets of raid1 on my Z87 system and another raid1 set on the Marvell controller.

In my experience, bandwidth is just part of the equation for video editing.

Access times is also very important for when you are scrubbing on the time line.

Whatever you do, get a minimum of 7200 RPM drive. Beware of the big drives that are only 5900RPM. When you RAID0, you aggregate the bandwidth of the drives, but you access times never get better.

I really can't see that you would need 8TB of space for an active project. Other then the convenience of just leaving everything on the drive from multiple projects.
 
BMCC raw has me hovering around 4-5tb at this moment.

But the access times is interesting specifically now that I can get the HGST 4TB for the same price.
 
I'll go with RAID10 via 4x 4tb (just because I already have 4 tb drives). Is it possible to add more to raid10?

My mobo is already set at ahci (a while back) but yes it is a gigabyte mobo.

yes, I did raid 0 on this mobo a few years back.

Unless there is a cheap raid card I can buy? Cheap as in under $100. But I plan on upgrading moving my rigs in 1-1.5 years.
