I have an Antec case that has a place to put a 80mm fan in front of the drive(s). Does it matter which position I mount the drive? I currently have it in the middle so the air flows on top and on bottom.

most harddrives don't get that hot in the first place that should be fine.

Common misconception. Most data failure is due to 1) mechanical failure of the heads (TRUE crashing) and 2) prolonged overheating. (I'm leaving out software problems like power failure before dumping write caches etc)

I always try to leave at least 1 space between drives in the cage and never put a HD next to a burner 'cause these get pretty toasty sometimes. Airflow over top and bottom should be fine.
