I was reading today on another tech site about over clocking usb ports on your system for todays higher end mice, and the benefits and cons of suck an act. However, it didnt mention how to go about it.

where would I look into such an option, bios? Some sort of tweaking app? In windows itself?

thanks for any help
 
Yeah i did it a while ago, raised the polling to 500hz, it's great!
Mind you, i have nothing else plugged into my usb but my mouse, but i sometimes use a USB drive and it doesn't seem to mind the higher USB speed.

Did I feel a difference? HELL YES. Aiming became soooo much easier, i loved it.

I did the math (although i might be wrong here)...

1000 ms / 125 = 8 ms response time [ default mouse reaction time ]
1000 ms / 500 = 2 ms response time [ tweaked mouse reaction time ]

Do I feel a difference between 8ms and 2 ms ? Yes, it feels more 'instantaneous', although after a while of using it, you get acustomed to it and can't notice it anymore.

Now, obviously people are going to go and say that you can't feel the difference between 8ms and 2 ms. To those people, don't underestimate the human body.

For reference I have a logitech MX 510 mouse on a func surface (i know the mouse pad doesn't have much to do with it) and my motherboard is an Abit KV8 pro 1.1 (it's a buggy p.o.s., can't believe [H] recommended it) and i'm running win2k.

Links? Unfortunately I can't remember where and I didn't bookmark it, I just searched for 'usb 500hz' on google and i found plenty of links.

Lastly, it can screw up your windows, and it might damage usb devices/usb ports (i think). I just felt i should mention that before letting you go.

Personally, i'd do it again!
 
Thanks for the info. Fascinating. I could definately feel the difference going to 250hz. I can't say I noticed beyond that. Still. A nice tweak.
 
ya i read about it at toms hardware, via their new razor mouse review. Using a mx510 and a func pad, wondering if i was getting the most out of my mouse, i figured, heck, why not try it.

And you are right, i hopped into cs source right away, after a reboot, and i could immediately feel a difference, definate change for the better.
 
Yup, there is now a 0.3beta out which has better compatability with 250hz and 1000hz. I just got my MX510 now, and wow is it smooth as buttah at 1000hz on a P4P800 ;)

Everyone is hesitant to post the download link because it *can* bluescreen your system or screw up your other USB devices. Definitely only for the [H]ardcore who are willing to take a risk.

USB default is 125hz (8 millisecond delay) PS/2 default is 100hz (10 ms delay) but you can set 200hz (5ms) easily with windows. USB overclocked to 1000hz is a nice 1ms delay.
