Use of fans with heatsinks in push/pull seems to be a recent trend.

I understand that many coolers that have 2 sets of clips can get lower temps
in this fan setup. I don't really understand the physics principles that are involved,
but I assume that one fan is actually assisting the other in some manner using
this array?

If coolers such as the Megahalems and TRUE are designed to be used in this
manner, is using one with a single fan a mistake?

No, not a mistake. If your cooling is adequate with one fan, then use one.
On the TRUE, the fins are close together, one fan pushing doesn't seem to have the "pressure" to do the whole job. Even with a 38mm Panaflo fan, I noticed a big difference in temps by using a "pull" fan also. ( this was on an oc'd q9550)
 
My $.02, based on clean up of air & water cooled systems, I am all about throttling back on the fans when the system is idling. I am have learned that these system are expensive air filters collecting all kinds of crap out of the air. A real PITA to clean! So for a push/pull system, I would like to see even 1 fan shut off with the other slowing to minimal speed.

Yes, I use filters! There is still a lot of crap in the air & slowing the air flow would be apart of system management.
