Purchasing Windows 7 Key

Hey guys,

Is it possible to purchase a Windows 7 key by itself? For example, if I already have a windows 7 install disk and want to install a fresh licensed copy of Windows 7 onto a newly built computer, but I don't want to use the key that's already used by another computer. In essence, I'm just looking for a way to install quick without having to buy online and wait to ship, or go to a store and pay high prices. Are the OEM downloads for sale legit? Like this website: http://download-company.com/shop/item/325/?cpn=www_odessa_wednet_edu_soft18? If possible though, I wouldn't want to have to sit a wait for it to download anyways.

AFAIK, the only legit key-only licenses that you can purchase are the Volume License Keys, but even then you still would be getting a paper cert with the key on it. As for that download-company.com store....that looks very shady even with their promises that it's authentic. One option would be to buy windows 7 from a forum user or someone that would be willing to email the key to you before shipping it. But that depends on how much you trust the seller :p

You cannot buy just a key legally. For oem/retail it must be sold with the COA/disk and VLK has already been covered. Sounds like another company reselling TechNet keys.

Thanks for the reply guys. What about the download option from microsoft.com? Would that be an instant key, or would it be embedded into te download file and not accessible until the download completes? Although it would be pricier than OEM.

techicly you can just use the "any time Upgrade" and buy it from that wile in the 60 day trial mode should work

would that come out to being cheaper than or more expensive as just buying the full version?

If you're a student with a valid .edu email address you can order Windows 7 from http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx

When I ordered it from there, I received the key in an email and an option to download the setup files.

Other than that, Technet will make the keys available to you immediately. Doing a quick google search for technet coupons allowed me to know off about $100 to the subscription.

Another option you would have, if you need to install now, is to just not enter a key. You get 30 days, plus the ability to rearm that several times afterwards. If you already have a disc, you could install Home Premium for now, and then buy the cheapest legit Home Premium you can find. Once it arrives, just pop in your key and you are good to go. I did this on my wife's laptop, while we waited for her Windows 7 Upgrade to arrive in the mail. We had no issues at all.

What about the keys available on ebay? I bought a Win 7 Ultimate license that will work for 32 or 64 bit from ebay. I got mine for $29, and I already had the install disk. There are lots on there, I just assumed someone had an MSDN or Technet and they sell their extra keys.
I've been using the key for a couple months now and it's completely fine, all updates and show legit.

Just because it will validate now, doesn't mean it will later or that it is actually legit. You cannot resell "extra" MSDN or technet keys.

We've been down this road a ton of times already............they aren't supposed to be selling those keys. You gambled your money and got a key that works from someone who broke the Microsoft terms of use for Technet.

Yeah, I had a hunch it was that or someone breaking the Volume License agreement. For $29 I guess I can take a chance. If I get blackballed from M$ then I'll install the copy I got with my student discount, :)

I think that student discount site only let's you upgrade with an already valid license with another OS. "*You must be a licensed user of one of the following products to be eligible for purchase of Microsoft® Windows 7 Professional Upgrade License"

That idea to install the 30 day trial and order online is a a good one though.

I doubt the MS Black choppers will pay you a visit.;)

Probably not, but why would you want to give someone $29 that is essentially giving you a pirate key?

Yah, it'll probably work, but you're just lining some unethical bastards pockets. Piracy for profit is even worse then just torrenting it.

I saw some keys on ebay for $6.99. That's an even cheaper deal.

As mentioned buy it online and they email you the key. Then you can use your disk assuming its the same version you got a key for. I got a student version too and they emailed the key with the links.

Btw you can do a full install with an upgrade key. You just install without the key and then do the regedit and reset step that's been detailed on this and other forums for a while now and then register the fresh install with the upgrade key. Afterall, by now just about everyone has bought a fresh copy of at least one OS in the past. I know I sure did.
