Purchase in China

I am hoping someone may be able to help me figure this out.

My friend (who is a student) is moving to Beijing, China for a year. He asked me if he should buy a notebook here in the States or if he should purchase it in China, because he was unsure about the power requirements.

I was unsure on how to answer this and was hoping that maybe someone here may know.

I am also traveling to Hong Kong in the coming semester. I was told by a student who went 2 years ago that in Hong Kong there are plenty of places to buy a laptop. he got a decent one for less than it cost over here with an international warrenty. he doesnt game a whole lot, his computer usage is a bit more casaual than me. thats why im deciding to get one over here. basically because i cant wait that long to be without a computer after i land.
