Hi, I'm looking for a quiet pump that need not have great flow, but be reliable.
What do you reccommend? I see the hydor L20 for $40, what are the pros and cons of this pump?

Also, do any popular pumps have mounting holes on the base?
 
Eihm's are supposta be good, basicly a benchmark for all other pumps, IF you want to go with AC power, they are also usually a bit bigger.

A good DC pump that fits your criteria is the Laing DDC (Swiffy 355, danger den DDC-12v), but it's gonna run you about 75 bucks new. DC's are usualy a bit more expensive than AC pumps.

There is also the mag-series pumps... they are really small (les than 2"x2"x2") and a bit cheaper than the ddc to boot.
 
dont slack up with the pump, get a D5 from danger den or the swiftech equiv. or the DDC12v as mentiond

im gonna make a suggestion and DO NOT go with the mag series pumps
ive had 2 fail on me in a weeks time, danger den replaced both but i said forget it and send me a D5 after the 2nd failure
 
The DDC is great if space is a concern, if not the D5 should be rock solid and comes with a bonus- you can 'dial' the pump between 5 different settings in order to balance performance with sound and the two pumps are very close in price.

It looks like voyeurmods.com has decent pricing currently on both pumps - right around $77 each + shipping.

Asetek pumps seem to currently have a bit of a problem with their USB circuitry otherwise I would have one already. :(

This question about quiet is bound to evince a great discussion of what is a quiet pump. It is highly dependent upon what pumps you have heard before. Many people call the DDC a quiet pump when comparing it to the D5. However, those how have used or heard an Eheim pump would say it is definitely not quiet by any means, but quieter than the D5. The fact is that Ehiem and their decendants (Innovatek HPPS and Aqua Computer Aquastream) are just about the quietest and most reliable pumps in existence. The 12 volt Eheim's are all based on tried and true aquarium pumps that have withstood the test of time for longevity and reliability.

Would a pump modeled after the 1046/48 power a high flow setup? I mean 1/2 or 3/8 ;)

Ask around as there are people here who have big bores with Eheim 1048 and 1250's. Not sure if any have 1046's anymore.

now the real question is if you came up with the model D-83 "suregrip" from "the naked gun" series of movies (or was it "the police squad" TV series?) or if you came up with the far more recent austin powers usage of swedish pumping hardware.


as for pumps......whatever your budget allows for: the D5 is one of the best mainstream units.

still less awkward than the D-83.

D5 runs a few watts DC. enough to be......interesting. :cool:

D-83 runs off of a freaking two stroke grass trimmer engine. :eek:

euro trip TOTALLY stole that one.....although naked gun 2 1/2 might have stolen from someone else before hand.
