Pumps interfering with HD's?

Pumps interfering with HD's? I know there has been this discussion before, but I have a different plan in mind based on what was discussed here a while back. Just to remind you I have an Aqua Computer Aquastream pump. This is based on the Eheim 1046 and is actually a 9 volt alternating current pump. The 12 volt direct current goes into the Aquastream controller and the resulting signal sent to the pump is alternating current if this might make a difference. Aqua Computer sells a pump shroud called a FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) for the Aquastream.

Question: Is having the AC pump in such proximity to the HD's going to cause any distortion of my data from the alternating magnetic field surrounding the pump body? I already have a FMJ, but kind of like the look of the pump and don't really want to use it. Ideas?

If it matters, those are 74Gb WD Raptors watercooled with Koolance HD coolers.

The pump will not interfere. I believe it was Cathar who made the post that the field produced by a pump sitting next to a HD is a couple thousand times too weak to interfere with any of the bits.

yeah, people generally get pinicky over nothing.. it's all misinformation.. like e...354 said.. it's fine.

It would take a magnet about as big as your case to scramble your hard drives. The magnets they use to record the geometry data on hard drive platters are gi-f'ing-normous, and even the electromagnets in the drive that actually perform the read/write activities are pretty powerful neodymium rare earth magnets. I honestly doubt that the magnetic field created by a pump is going to affect your HDDs too much.

Well my concern was that to wipe old MFM HD's we used to take a very small demagnetizer (electrical field) and pass it over the HD casing. One time I was in a hurry and took a pocket magnet and it not only wiped the drive, but bent the head arms because I heard it go "clunk."

I know what you are saying about the size of the magnet.
Yet it seems to me I've seen posts where people fixed unexplained HDD issues
by encasing their pump in steel. An old soup can if I remember correctly.

In that thread someone made the point that it was the read heads one should be concerned
with, not the platter. Wish I could find it. In any event it would be prudent to mount the HDD
far away from the pump as possible.

P. S. - a small hand-held compass (not the drawing kind) is an excellent mag field tester ;)

I think we have gone a long way since MFM HD. I haven't heard that term for many yr. now.

I also have a 5 1/4" full height 5 megabyte HD that I have been saving for one of those WD deals where you can trade in an old drive for a cheaper new drive. lol

the only interferance I see if all the 90degree bends you have. Not to mention you're using an already weak pump, those bends will kill its flopw even more.

but if that pump is ONLY cooling your hd's it'll be good, looks good!

That's the beauty of low flow as it doesn't hurt flow as much as a higher flowing setup. That pump is only used for the HD's. Thanks for the info and nice words. :)

I see that the consensus is that it won't affect my HD data although someone says something about the read heads being an issue. I haven't heard back from WD yet as I posted to them as well. However, at the AC forum they all suggest using the FMJ. I figure as butt ugly as the FMJ is that they didn't develop it for bling and probably might know something I don't about their Aquastream pump. So I have decided to err on the side of caution and use the FMJ. :D Took a day to get it all machined properly and now I have to wait for a nice day to paint. :(

Thats right TN....they developed it for people who are too paranoid to believe the facts lol (so they could suck more money out of people) :D I guess it cant hurt anything besides the look of your case mod though, it still is completely unnecessary.

As long as the hdd case is grounded it acts as a shielding. Im sure when they use those demagnetizers they don't ground it. You would need a very strong magnet Im sure to overcome the case shielding.

Most of the time it is people demanding an item that gets it in the market. Whether it's necessary or not is beside the point.

If people want it then someone will sell it.

I look at it as sort of a chicken and the egg scenario. AC has a large following of very loyal people who seem to drool over everything they release. Most of the stuff is perfectly practical, however many of the things AC puts out like the FMJ, and many of the people who buy AC gear are of the "because I can" mentality.

So perhaps AC made the FMJ not because there was demand for it, but because they could, and where AC goes at least some of their 'fan base' are sure to follow.

Along that same "because you can" mentality, and back on topic a little bit. TN : Perhaps you could mod the FMJ with the same method you used for the disc drives to make them fit the theme of your case. You really dont need to use it, but as you said, you already have it, and it really wont hurt anything (besides maybe aesthetics a bit) if you do use it.

DISCLAIMER : This is not a flame of AC or people who use AC gear. There is nothing wrong or bad with doing something "because you can". It also does not mean that any of AC's equipment is subpar quality or performance in any way (we just dont know what its performance is relative to other well tested gear). Please dont try to skew my post as flaming AC, or low flow, or "high flow FTW". I am sick and tired of people taking anything I say and trying to find a way to take offense at it. Please dont make me put this disclaimer in anything I say pertaining to AC from here on out.... [/rant]

ROFLMAO :)

BTW, it was an interesting diversion getting the FMJ setup as I had to tap 6 holes, put in four countersinks to mount the Aquastream like I wanted it. Now I have to drill four more holes to get it mounted and make some mods to my HD rack. Will post to FF the fun I had yesterday today. :D

And thank you for suggesting the aluminum covering as that will be the perfect solution as I hate painting stuff.

If magnetic shielding is an issue or you have concerns there really is only one product that will work for you, MuMetal:

http://metals.about.com/library/bldef-Mu-Metal.htm

I provided the site for reference only; google will find you tons of sources. The product is used widely in car stereo installations for noise reduction. Many home theater speakers have their magnets wrapped with this product to prevent interference with CRT style picture tubes.

It comes in many forms including easy to work with foil.

The subject of interference has come up in the hard drive forum as well especially when associated with SATA and particularly using very long SATA cables. Some folk are using MuMetal to shield their cables.

Just some thoughts. Oh, nice looking installation btw.
