Hi I am going to spend my x-mas money on a new water cooling setup. I am goin to be goiin small bore and will be cooling my cpu and gpu. 3700+ and a 7800gt. I will have a x-flow 120.2 radiator and I am wondering if this pump:

will be able to handle everything ok or if i need something w/a little more power. Also is this a quiet and reliable pump. Noise is a big issue to me so it has to be quiet. Thanks for the help.
 
I haven't watercooled myself but I still read about it and such. From what I remember, the C Systems pumps have been breaking since they first came out.
 
c-systems pumps have a pretty lousy track record in terms of their previous generation pump.

the present unit, like the one you linked, seems to be more reliable, however i have read at least a few people say that theirs have broken. no matter what the product there are going be a few bad ones out there, however it's hard to say if the present generation pumps are par, with a few people having had bad luck, or sub-par: just not enough information out there to say for sure.

laing DDC is quiet, usually reliable, and gets some good head pressure. if you have enough cash to move up to that pump, and are planning on using 8mm ID tubing, that's a good unit.
 
ya everything i've heard about c-systems is that they're crap. if your going small bore i say try out the DDC Link. Its supposed to be a small, quiet, powerful pump.

Its meant for the "Low flow" systems (points to the eheim's).

Go DDC, and if you want more flow, 1/2" mod it.
 
Don't get a boring big bore pump. Do yourself a favor and get either an Aqua Computer Aquastream or an Innovatek HPPS Plus. You will be happy that you have something to build a real system on.

do you have a specific problem with the DDC?

it is small, doesn't dump much heat into the water, quiet, reliable, suitable for moderate tubing sizes and puts out lots of head pressure.

i don't think that you will deny that added head helps blocks from you favorite brand perform better, just as much as it helps blocks made by anyone else. at least, i hope that you don't deny that a given block performs better with added flow and pressure...........

The DDC is a nice quiet pump, if you have a bit more room and want slightly quieter, and dont mind an AC pump go for a regular Eheim 1048. You will save a lot of money over an Aquastream pump which wont give you many tangible benefits, nothing performance wise at least.

As I stated earlier, the real thing you want is the ability to make a real watercooling system instead of a hodgepod of parts like others around here would encorage you to invest in.

I'd skip that because it relies on power from your wall, not the 12v line from your PSU. If you want lower flow, the Aquastream or HPPS+ will work and can give a push with higher flow and overvolting - they both support it. The downside is price.

The Laing DDC would be your best bet for silence and power with 12v ease of use. What size of tubing will you be using? Watercool and Alphacool have plexiglass filltanks and tops for the DDC that have G1/4" threads. Those make it easy to use 8mm compressions or push fits with it instead of converters to drop it to 5/16" or 1/4". Alphacool parts are now available as Frozen CPU too. It's fine stock if you use 3/8" ID or don't mind using converters.

no one company makes the best parts for all applications in a given industry.

if you were to say that maxtor IDE drives were the best thing going, i would contest you. if you were to say that maxtor 10K SCSI drives were the best 10K drives out there, i would agree with you.

you're not going to get the best in a number of related products from any one company. A-C is a feature rich comprimise solution.

the pump that the OP put up is a 12 volt pump. it does not use 120 VAC as you claim: it runs off of the 12 V rail of a computer PSU.

given that i fit 1/2 inch ID tubing ove my own 5/8 inch OD barbs, i'm pretty sure that he could use the DDC as-is with 8 mm ID tubing. if he wants to go smaller than that, he might very well need to use a specialty top.

As for the pumps, i've used a DDC with great sucess on both 1/2" and 7/16" tubing. I had planned on going wtih 3/8 the last tiem around, but ended up just ordering 7/16". However, I cant see how it would hurt the pump to run its native tubing size, so rock and roll. Smaller tubing... I dont see why not either. The DDC is a great pump and bests a lot of pumps that are more than twice the size.
 
Before I get flamed: Not an AC commercial, nor do I think AC is the Gods of Coolness (everyone knows that's Innovatek).

I've been VERY happy with my Eheim/Aquastream pump. It's REMARKABLY quiet, especially with the Innovatek Vibration Dampening Mounts. It's so quiet in fact that, on my last build, I sometimes opened the side of the case to put my hand on top of it to see if it was still working.

It's pumping through Innovatek 8x10 hoses right now, through an Innovatek 2x120 radiator, an Innovatek XX-Flow CPU block, a Graph-o-matic GPU block, and res and gets the job done great. I'm so happy with the performance from that build that the one I'm working on now is going to be almost exactly the same but I'm adding an Aquastream controller to the mix.

I can understand how some people may be less than happy with TN's regular AC/Sharka plugs but in this case, since Kid8 did say he was going small bore I have to agree completely with her recommendation. While there may be other pumps available as good (or better), the AC solution is definitely something to consider.

Now if Kid8 said he was going with 1/2" DD gear and TN said he should scrap his plans and go AC, I'd be likely to agree with people's comments. Instead, in this case, I'm going to have to say it's everyone trying to start some kind of flame war thats being juvinile or Nazi-ish. TN made a friggin recommendation based on what someone asked in a post... how is that being "a bitch" as TehRoflcopter so elequently put it?

Also note flamers: TN wasn't the first one to mention AC gear (and she also recommended a look at a non-AC pump)! Scroll up before assuming TN jumped right in with AC. Derrick70 was the first person to mention AC gear. Instead, what I'm seeing is some kind of stupid comment (again from TehRoflcopter) making it sound like German gear is worthless. Not even really sure what that stupid sig means... anal sex looks good? No results? WTF does that mean?

Just because TN mentions AC isn't reason enough to flame her... I'm an Innovatek fan, does that mean every Swiftech/DD/Koolance/whatever fan should start flaming me?

I think the reason why TN got flamed is the fact that while she is recommending AC parts, she has a tendancy to put out a lot of tounge-in-cheek insults to anything else. Just my $0.02 though.

My question is this: how well does the tubing commonly used in small bore setups stretch? I know that it is much stiffer than what us "big-bore" guys usually use, so I dont know how ell it would expand to go over teh 3/8" barbs on a ddc... any insight into this?

I can personally attest to the fact that small bore hose (at least Innovatek 8x1 hose) does not stretch very much at room temperatures. It's flexible as hell and remarkably easy to route but it can be a pain to even stretch it over the Innovatek fittings it's designed to go over.

That's probably why when it gets even smaller (AC's 6x8 hoses) they didn't bother with compression fittings and instead went with those outter wall grip fittings (Plug N Cool).

I have to agree - I don't want to start a large bore vs. small bore debate but fan boy recommendations aren't really appreciated in this case - the guy wants a performance kit. I'm not saying an AC kit won't perform but I'm fairly sure a 1/2" bore kit could be constructed and would be significantly cheaper, it'd also offer the same if not better performance.

The DDC and D5's are very nice pumps - be sure to purchase one of the clear tops if you go down the DDC route, it'll allow you to fit 1/2" barbs and increase flow by removing the right angle in the pump.

Keep away from the CSP-MAG, here's why.

Now here's something I could see as being something to start a conversation about... we're not discussing large bore vs small bore. Or the costs associated with going either way.

It's well established that large bore performs better (although arguable that the performance increase actually translates into much difference in overclock, stability, etc) and a visit to most any site will prove that it's less expensive in most instances.

Kid8, in his original question, asked about building a small bore set-up. If he was trying to decide between large or small he would have asked that. Instead he said he was building a small bore and was wondering what pump he should use.

Now, instead of TN, Derrick, myself, or other German fans trying to convince someone to go the other way... here comes the large bore crowd trying to do the same thing we used to (or still do) get flamed for doing.

In the instance of a small bore build, there's nothing fan-boy about recommending the Eheim pump that AC/Innova rely so heavily on. It's a fine performing, very quiet, well tested pump.
 
Except for size, and cost. 75 bux for the ddc as opposed to 110 (from sharka) for the aquastream.

The DDC is very small, and costs just as much as any other 12v pump, all while providing excellent flow rates and head. Also, in its stock config (3/8) it is fairly close to being a small-bore setup. Or, if you want, get a clear top for it and put whatever fittings you want. Plug-and-cool's come to mind specificly. Only problem there is that a quick price check on a DDC with a poly-top comes to 65 british pounds (112 bux) with VAT.

Still, you get a pump with higher flow, more head, and a much smaller package(fits in 3-1/2 bays instead of 5-1/4 bays) for the same price.

The problem with TN's post was not what she recommended, but how she did it. And to the people who were mindlessly using poor language to insult TN...that is uncalled for. If TN had worded : "Don't get a boring big bore pump. Do yourself a favor and get either an Aqua Computer Aquastream or an Innovatek HPPS Plus. You will be happy that you have something to build a real system on." like this :

"A couple of nice, feature rich pumps you might want to consider would be the AC Aquastream or the Innovatek HPPS Plus. Both are Eheim pumps converted to run on 12V and designed to be able to take advantage of a number of cool features such as pump monitoring. They may be a bit more pricey than some of the aforementioned pumps however, but I believe it is worth it."

Then there would have been no problem with it. It is the fact that she tries to insult other systems while making her recommendation instead of simply making the recommendation.


For the OP : To sum up what has been said so far. The new CSP pumps seem to be better than their older ones, but they do have a track record of pump problems. Some of your best options are :

Eheim 1046 or 1048 + PCI Relay : This would be a 120VAC pump, the relay would be used to let it turn on with your computer and save you a bit of hassle, it does require a bit of electrical wiring, and you have to slice the power cord on the pump. The pumps go for around 40-45 for the 1046 and 50-55 for the 1048, add in about 15-20$ for the PCI relay and you are looking at 55-75$.

Laing DDC : This is the smallest pump suggested, is almost as quiet as the Eheim or the two pumps I will mention below. It is a stronger pump than all the others I am listing, and is natively 12VDC so it is easy to use. It comes with a 3pin fan connector for RPM monitoring as well. The barbs on this pump are 3/8" so you may need to convert the tubing size down if your using smaller tubing. These pumps generally go for about 75$.

AC Aquastream or Innovatek HPPS : These two pumps are converted Eheim 1046 (or 1048?). They have been made to run natively on 12VDC so you dont have to fiddle with a PCI relay. They are also made to interface with their respective LCD panels for things like remotely controlling / monitoring the pump, however those LCD/VFD screens are quite expensive. TN or someone would better be able to tell you the different features, which I feel are redundant or useless but many people like them. These pumps are very quiet, however a bit large (same size as the other Eheims). They are also quite pricey at around 110$.


These three are probably your best options, although not your only options there are lots of different aquarium pumps. Review on your own the differences between them and come to your own decision.
 
The Aquaxtreme50z is a pretty good pump. It is quieter than the D5 and most other pumps (not the eheim 1250, though), has 10.5'' max head, is 12V DC, pulls only 9W, and is fairly small.

It actually outperforms the D5 in a few instances (I read this a while back in a review, no link, sorry) simply because the heat it dissipates is less.

The pump is also affordable at around $70-75.
