Pump/Res Combos - Any good?

I was thinking about taking a plunge into some WC for fun and I was looking through the options and saw the pump/res combos... Is there any downside to these? Seems like would be a good idea to keep the tubing simpler.
 
Usually not. Go with a MCP655 or a Laing 3.2/MCP355 w/ any top. If you want to you can use a reservoir top with the MCP355.
 
If you want to have your pump and res combined, your best option is a DDC pump with a res top. The XSPC res top is generally considered to be the best.
 
i bought the xspc res to fit on top of my mc355 now that the res/pump is at the bottom of my case how would i fill the loop with water? I dont really wanna install a T-line is there any other way to fill the loop?
 
Easy, just top off the res through the fill port, jump your PSU to run for a few seconds until the res water level is reduced, turn off the PSU, and repeat. This is usually called bumping the pump and it works well.

If you don't know how, you can jump the PSU by putting a paper clip from the green cable to any black cable on the PSU 24 pin plug. Do this with the unit unplugged from the wall. Also, flip the power switch on the back of the unit to open (the O setting, not the - setting). Once its jumped with the paper clip, plugged into the wall, your pump is plugged into it, and your res is filled up, flip the switch on the back of the PSU to turn it on, watch the water level as it drops and turn it off when it gets low. Really easy.
