Is there any concern about the pump being located too close to your hard drives. I currently have my Laing D5 about 1/2 and inch from my hard drives and obviously dont want to do any damage to the data so should i move it to be safe?

You could get the strongest magnet you could find, plop it right on top of your harddrive, and not damage the data. It takes an immense amount of force to flip the bits on a harddrive. The magnet on the head that does it is a hairs breadth away from the platter which is why it can do it, but once you get further away, even millimeters, it takes an incredible magnetic force to interfere with the bits. I cant remember off the top of my head but if you do a forum search there have been threads on this before.

Needless to say you are fine.
 
My 120V pump is actually touching the end of one of my 160gig SATA drives and has been for well over a year and I haven't had any problems.

My pump puts off a strong enough swing to make my monitor shimmy from 2 feet away.

Wow, I wonder if that emf can cause problems on unshielded crap like SATA cables, traces etc...
 
Hasn't yet and FWIW SATA cables are shielded...at least, mine are.

The old way to clear a HD was to use an electromagnetic source on the drive. If you get to strong a force you can ruin your drive by bending critical components.
