Pump louder after fluid change...

Im using the Swiftech MCP650 pump and my first set of fluids was a mix between water and the green hydrx(by swiftech) and the pump was relatively quiet. Couldnt even hardly tell it was on. Now I swapped out the coolant with fresh coolant and this time I am using a 3:1 mix of the clear innovatec protect pro and distilled water. But this time the pump is making a high pitch whine. Its nothing bad, but just a lot louder then before the change. Is that normal? I liked the quiet pump better :D

Make sure you have all the air outta the pump. It could be that your old mixture of coolant and water had more lubricating properties to it.

I'm always surprised when peeps talk about this pump being quiet. I had one for about a week before I returned it for being too freakin' loud. I just couldn't stand that whine.

Someone put MCP650 and quiet in the same sentence?! Blasphemy! That high pitch whine is the Swiftech Signature Series authenticity marker. However, the pump is powerful so the noise is welcomed into my case anytime

Maybe the previous mixture had better lubricant properties. Next time I change my fluid I will put the Swiftech stuff back in. I just like this Innovatek stuff cause its clear, goes better with my "theme" :p

I will take a sound clip of it now and when I change it.

Can't hear my pump. Just Hard drive, and air moving through the rad's and case.

my pump is near silent (vibrates alot tho)

all i can hear is my damn 6800 stock fan.....thats getting replaced next

I have a MCP655 using 100% distilled water. it is super loud and high pitched as heck... :(

With my cases closes I can't hear any of the D4 (MCP650) or D5 (MCP655) that I have in my systems. I have 2 D4 running and one D5 and on the system with the D5 the Papst 120mm fans are louder than the pump.

 bet you can't hear a pin drop in that room? or even 1,000!!?!

I have 2 D4's, and both were given away because they are so damn noisy! My test of noisyness is this...

during the night, if I can tell the PC is on from about 1m away... then it's noisy. If I have to physically put my ear to the case... then it's quiet.
If it can't tell if it's on or off without looking for flashing LEDs, then it's silent.

The D4/D5 is a very quiet pump when used correctly. If you completely bleed the loop of all air, and have a completely unrestricted inlet, and are using decent coolant then you shouldn't really notice the whine. It makes you wonder why some people have a whine and others dont...it isn't really that some are loud and some aren't, it is that some people use the pump correctly and others dont.

Well, I have no idea how loud they are at nite when I'm trying to sleep, My systems have their own bedroom, I guess they are sort of special....................... No one said that they were silent, mine aren't built to be, But then again, like you said in another thread, American systems are all so ghetto, so I guess you opinion doesn't really count................ As if anyones oppinion about my system matters anyways.

nope.. it's because people have a different perception of sound.. not because everyone who has a whiney D4/5 is so stupid as to not notice that they have air in the system and have plugged up the inlet of their pump with the brain matter than obviously fell out of their heads when setting up the loop.

But maybe i'm just plain wrong and you're one of the elite few who knows it all

what's loud to one is quiet to another.

More than likely you're plain wrong, just as you were about how all american system are so Ghetto................

Thats why the same people with the same pump report problems similar to the OP or vice versa  But then again perhaps peoples "perception of sound" changes by the hour.

In response to the overwhelming demand for a quieter MCP655, we are proud to introduce the new MCP655 pump, which features several key improvements:

Then the overwelming majority of users must not have correctly set-up their pump?

I presume you have a D4 and a D5?

Yes I have 3 different versions, the original Laing 370 GPH D4, A PolarFlo 317 GPH D4 and a Swiftech MCP655. The Swiftech is the quietest and the one I concider the bst, but I still have all 3 in use. When installed fixed to the case with the foam mounting pad so that there is no vibration and with the case closed, they are quiet enough for me, but I do have 3 to 4 high end systems running in my computer room pretty much 24/7. Like I said before, silent, nope, quiet, I think so, at least quiet enough for me to run all 3 in my systems at the same time and still game and work without the sound getting on my nerves.

I also have the original Laing one and the Swiftech one, and i'd agree with you on these two, the Laing is by far the noisiest (i'll have to say IMO here before Esomeoneorother3something gets personal) and the Swiftech is significantly quiter.. but it is still too noisy for my liking, I even find the DDC noisy in the flesh.

For me, I only have the one system, and it's situated in the living room, during the day noise is not an issue.. but during the night.. i prefer my piece and am very sensitive to background noise.

The best pumps i've used so far (fixed and padded) are the AC aquastream, eheim 1048 and Hydor L20 as they are virtually silent, even close up.

The Hydor L30 and the Eheim 1250 do make a noise... but inside a padded case and bolted down properly, they are essentially silent from that perspective

The Laing however, whines incessantly and I personally can't live with it, the D5 on a number 3 setting is very useable (at a performance drop to the level of a DDC i believe) and I would probably stick with it if I could, but it I want 3/8" fittings and the DDC has native 3/8" barbs and are easier to get hold of, so i'm using one of those... I would probably still prefer an ehiem 1250, but the advantages of the DDCs size and the fact that it's DC means that it'll stay, for now.

The DDC is an incredible pump. Especially if you perform the simple intake mod to it, it increases the flow 70% without increasing the noise or dropping the head pressure. The DDC with the intake mod is THE best pump for the quiet minded performance cooler imo.

At least things have improved significantly in the last 2-3 yrs. You don't see anyone selling/recommending sound dampening material anymore. And it's great to see a variety of 12v pumps now. There used to be only 1 and it was $125+ option. So much nicer than having to cut the wires to your pump and setting up a relay card.

I've thought about doing the mod too... the tests show a great increase in flow over the original restricted inlet, but the problem is my new water cooling setup is actually easier to route if I have the inlet and outlet facing the same direction.

It's something to think about though for those ever so frequent rainy days during the coming autumn period.

Lee did a great job with the testing and modding of the DDC pump when it first came out. One of these days I may get around to building a smaller system and can try that mod..................... :D

sound perception can and does change by the hour, turn your computer on during midday and compare its sound to it by turning it on at midnight....the d4/650 is normally denominated as a noisy pump, and having owning one and know a modded 350, i can tell you in my opinion it is noisy, furthermore most of the reviews online that have reviewed the 650 and then the 655. the first thing they have to say is how "silent" it is compared to the 650....

but nothing perception is perception, for you its not noisy for others it is....

personally it could be the new fluids...

Erasmus354:the performance increase with the 350 using the mod in low resistance waterblock and low resistance radiator scenario, was about 46% going lower with more resistance parts etc...its still however a huge jump.
personally i changed my 650 for the 350 same tubing, and temps went down 1 degree which is nothing using the same ambient temp, but for me its a win, i didnt loose any performance and gained silence:)

Bio-Hazard:feel free to use it with 1/2 id....no problems here.....inlet was modded to 1/2 and the outlet has a 1 inch 3/8 tubing, with the 1/2 over it, no need for "fittings"...a worthy upgrade this little pump is if you want silence....

Yup. I agree with you 100%.

I preach this mod because i've done it. I know I get annoying sometimes, but I am not kidding, this was one of the best experiments and the best 30 minutes i've ever wasted.

my comp passes if i dont have the antec fans running at medium speed, just BARELY fails the 1 meter test with fans on medium, now if i could only silence those noisy crickets outside(seriously)
got a MCP655 at max speed, no noise issues, i do hear the pump if my case is open and my heads really close to the pump, but that is never true unless im benching at real high voltage ;) hdds are absolutly silent, dont even hear the head noise so many ppl complain about, my pc is damn near dead silent :D
