Pump issues

I have a danner pondmaster pump in my setup. I fill and bleed the system and all seems fine. However if I shut the pump off, then turn it back on, whether instantly or after a period of time; the thing stalls.

It sounds as if it is trying to work, but it vibrates really heavily with very little water moving. The only way I can get it to start pushing water, like it should, is to introduce a good bit of air near the intake. Sometimes it will pull out of this on its own, but I am afraid to mount it, as I wont be able to manipulate the loop to add air, to get her running again.

Any ideas as to what the issue could be here?

What are your components, which danner is it, and what is the flow pattern? You need to be specific.

duh, sorry I left that out.

I am using a danner mag 5 and Dtek jr-120 heater core with 1/2" tubing.

I hooked it up to leak test the pump after sealing the impeller cover so it is currently only the pump and rad. So you can imagine the loop is pretty simplistic at this point.

Outlet to rad (3 foot of hose), rad to T-line back to inlet (2 foot of hose combined). Rad is laying down, barbs are facing up. Pump is pulling from the top and pushing water horizontally back to the rad.

I just let the thing run over night, to bleed, and it runs flawlessly. So I shut it off...let it sit, turn it back on and nothing =( Just sits there and vibrates and tries to push the water but nothing.

Thanks for any help!

Anyone have any ideas?

Dying pump?

Could unseen air pockets cause such a thing?

My mag 3 has problems starting occasionally, but it turnes on within 2 seconds. It just clicks and clicks a few times, then it goes like normal. You must have a defective pump or a messed up impellor. Are you sure you assembled it correctly with the little rubber things on the ends of the shaft and the washers in the right places?
