PSX Emulator

So I recently got the ePSXe 1.70 emulator with the plug-ins and BIOS, and Downloaded a couple ROMs for PS1 games that I own (which makes it completely legal) cause my PS2 recently took a dive, and in Sony's infinite wisdom they decided that the PS3 should not be Backwards Compatible (Which my Xbox360 kinda is, but its nice that on both consoles you can download Original Xbox, or PS1 classics from the store) but since I dont have a PS2 anymore, I can't play some of my all time favorite PS1 classics, such as Castlevania - SotN, and Metal Gear Solid (tho I have the remake for Gamecube which is awesome) as well as quite a few other PS1 games (FFVII of course !) so I want to play them, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to get this emulator to work, so I was hoping someone with Experience using it could help me out and tell me how to get it up and running properly.

I've always been able to play PS1 games on my PS3. Doesn't it work for you?

I have used the ePSXe as well, though. The advantage in doing it on a PC is that customization of shaders & renderers goes a long way.

Right now, I use my Xperia Play to play PS1 games. :D

Only the launch PS3's are backwards compatible I think. I'm not sure if they still are after Sony's "updates" though. :p

If you're trying to load the games from the disc I don't think that's the best idea. You're better off finding the image files (somewhere from the interweb) for the games you own and then load them with File > Run ISO

Also I think Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.9 is the best video plugin around. As for sound I just use the ePSXe SPU core 1.7.0

No, only the launch PS3s are compatible with PS2 games. All PS3s work with PS1 games though.

Every PS3 is backwards compatible with PS1 games. Running them on the computer does have its benefits though. I don't remember much about the setup of epsxe, as it's been a while. I'm sure there are tutorials on their site though.

A funny thing with this PCSX that I'm running is that the output screen remains blank if I have windows aero theme on. I have to turn off the aero effect to get it to display properly. There's the audio running, but no display unless I turn off aero.

Well, just thought I'd share in case you're facing similar issue with no display and nothing else works

Eternal SPU is definitely the best sound plugin

Some of the PS3's after launch could emulate PS2 games through software since the original chips were removed. It was able to play about 70 percent of the PS2 catalog without issue , the original chips however could emulate about 95 percent of the catalog.

You can even buy these consoles on Ebay , sometimes they come up for sale for cheap even.

However PCSX is excellent at emulation so try that first and see how it goes. You can also use PS3 controllers with a bluetooth receiver to play games wirelessly with the right software.

I'm glad I clicked this thread because I had no idea my newer model PS3 could play PS1 games. Time to fire that dusty thing up! :p

Which one is generally better though, ePSXe or PCSX?

It probably doesn't matter much but i've always just used epsxe.

Takes a little tinkering with video plugins sometimes but shouldn't be difficult. Pete's OpenGL ones are probably your best bet. I've completed numerous games just fine.

Also there's a pretty fucking rad PS1 emulator for Android as well if you want it on the go... and have a phone.

Actually it was never full software emulation. Launch model PS3's had both the Emotion Engine and Graphics Processor (yes that is what they called the PS2's GPU). They later removed the EE, but kept the GP and emulated the CPU. Then they just removed the GP and didn't bother finding a way to emulate it.

ALL PS3s can play PS1 games, and ALL of them run it the same, in software mode, not hardware mode. This even applies to the launch PS3s that had full hardware-based PS2 compatibility and the later units that had the partial PS2 compatibility; they still ran the PS1 games in software mode.

I'm not sure why you'd need a PS1 emulator when the PSN store has most of the games available if you don't have the disc, and if you DO have the disc, you can just pop it into the PS3 and it will work just fine.

It will make a logical (virtual) memory card for you to use to save your games using your PS3's hard drive as the memory card.

It's no biggie, go ahead, slide your disc in, it will work.

I didn't realize that since I bought a slim PS3 model way after the PS2 support had been killed off. Thanks for the info.

I honestly wish they would have kept the compatibility but alas Sony kills off many good things.

I own both physical & digital copies of PS1 games. The one positive with the digital copies is the speed of when loading games. Both render the exact same in through the PSX emulator built into the PS3. :)

i obviously wasn't putting my PS1 disc in my PC lol i downloaded the ROM file, it just says it cant run it for smoe reason

and you're right, only the first 40gb and 80gb PS3s that came out at launch were backwards compatible.

Bleem ? wtf is that lol

I too think that they shoulda kept the Backwards Compatability. The PS2 had full support for PS1 games, the Xbox360 still lets you play at least 60% of Xbox games (I've only ran into one OG Xbox game that I wanted to play that I couldnt run on my xbox360, but luckily I kept my OG Xbox so It didn't really matter cuase I Could just play it on that. But my PS2 crapped out on me recently so I need to go get a new one, cause I still enjoy playing a lot of my PS1 and PS2 games. I don't ever trade in or sell my Games or Consoles, I am a collector, so I have all the games and consoles I've ever owned since i was 5yrs old. Still have my NES and SNES, my Sega, etc etc. And I kept my OG Xbox cause I put a lot of custom work on it, Inside and Out. Put custom Mods on there, that let me have a CUstom Dashboard, Play Burned games as well as Rip games to the Hard Drive so I didn't need the disc to play. And my favorite software mod, was the ability to be able to play NES, SNES, Sega, N64, all the Gameboy and Gameboy ADvance, etc etc, Emulators on my Xbox, that was awesome. And I also put my own Hard Drive in it so I had 120GB of storage instead of just 20GB. And Then I did some custom mods on the Case, Controller and some of the Lights. as well as add some more efficient and quite cooling fans in it. Which I have been wanting to Water-Cool one of my consoles for quite awhile now, the only problem I have had when it comes to planning it out, is trying to find a water block that fits on the CPU and GPU Chips. But I know it can be done, cause I've seen water-cooled Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3's and Wii's. SO I just gotta figure out what Water Blocks they used.

 Have you actually tried playing PS1 games on your PS3? It SHOULD work.

For the 687560742047204702750247810710738108301850757th time, if you insert your PS1 disc in your PS3, it WILL work.

You do not have to modify any settings or do ANYTHING to your ps3 to make it work. It works natively. Sony just hasn't done much in the way of advertising that feature, which is probably why you have no clue about it lol.

One bit of advice that I have when using ePSXe is to run the games at a lower resolution!!!

I do use a CRT however, so I don't know how that would work on an LCD (quality wise) but running games at 640x480 or 800x600 greatly increases picture quality...PS1 games at 2048x1536 look absolutely horrible! No matter what filters/settings you run the plugins at. :-p

As far as your issues OP...my only suggestion is to run different plugins, make sure you have the correct BIOS and well...Google it...I know one issue I had was the CD-ROM plugin. I seem to remember having to choose one that WASN'T the stock one thats selected from the get go.

Did I mention to Google it? Not trying to be a smart ass...but I PROMISE you whatever issues you are having others have had them as well and there ARE solutions to EVERY problem online. With as long as ePSXe has been out every-single-damn-issue has been had and has been fixed...whether by the ePSXe team themselves or by peoples trouble shooting it out in forums. In this instance Google truly is your friend! :)
