I have looked at the stickys above but it doesn't actually help all that much. I am wondering which PSU to get and was looking at Antec or Enermax.

-AMD64 3500+
-XFX 6800GS 256MB
-Corsair 1GB DDR2 RAM
-Asus A8N-SLI

I am looking at getting an SLI compatible PSU but have noticed it isn't worth it at all. This is my first build and does DDR2 run on this motherboard or not because i'm quite confused about it.

Thanks!

DDR2 Will not run on that motherboard. Your board has 184 pin DIMM slots for memory, so only DDR1 will work, as the integrated memory controller on the processor is only made for DDR. Plus, it physically won't fit, DDR2's 240 pins. Might wanna take back that DDR2 unless you plan on upgrading to AMD's next socket, m2 which will support ddr2.

How much do you want to spend? Do you want modular cabling? Do you want fancy bling-bling or an understated look? Are you planning on upgrading to an SLI setup in the future?

i have the antec neopower 480 and it works like a charm on my newcastle 3500+ 3 raptors 6600gt and 2 optical drives...
neopower will be fine for you

I am aiming to spend under $80. Don't care if it has bling bling or is normal but prefer blue LED's since case has side window. No, i don't plan on upgrading to SLI.

Thanks killa, i'll look out for it :)

What's modular cabling?

Oh, yes i would like modular cabling with the PSU but would like to get it as dirt cheap as possible from newegg. I first looked a PSU for 89.99 but then thought itmight not be needed since it was SLI and i'm not getting SLI anymore. Is it worth getting a good PSU now for the long run. Also i'm on a budget and don't "want" to spend above $80 unless it's worth it. Will keep that link in mind though :) Thanks.

Why would it not be for enthusiasts? It has 26A @ 12V. The PowerStream series is ruled out by price restrictions.

26A on the +12V isn't that much. The Powerstream 420W gives you 30A. Not to mention the Modstream series gives you lots of 5V power... which is pretty pointless these days.

It can't claim the same voltage regulation that the Powerstream offers, you don't get the fine voltage tuning, and the modular interface is known to exhibit a little bit of resistance due to the extra connections. If you're overclocking, you definitely want the Powerstream over the Modstream.

Your correct, 26A is kinda low on the 12V. I didn't know about the voltage regulation.

I was looking at another PSU but lost link and this was the next one i was looking at. Anyone got comments about it?

PSU

Old ATX12V v1.3 specification, so you get lots of 5V amperage, and only 28A on the +12V. It wouldn't be my choice.

Would a 400W PSU support:

3500+ AMD64
Asus A8N-SLI
1.5gb DDR400
6800GS 256mb

Or should i get a 500W PSU? I am talking about if it would work under 400W not if it would have alot of space.

Thanks for help so far :) Hard Forum is a great place for help with my rig project :D

After all the discussion, you still insist on using only wattage to make your purchasing decision? Bad idea...

You've already got tons of suggestions, just scroll up.

I know what you mean. But am wondering what would be he safes lowi can get. I don't live in the US, i live in New Zealand which is very far away and shipping costs a bi more than you think. Also they cost a bit over here but have found a Raidma 520W XP PSU and will go wth that though.

if i were you, i would get the Antec Neopower 480 v2.0. Its got sleaved wires and has a wopping 36A on the dual 12v rails. Thats what I have and I love it. Its got a cable management system so you can only use the cables you need to reduce clutter inside your case and improve airflow. Its also come with a ton of cables for whatever you need. It gives you two pci-express cables if you do decide to go sli. you can just use one of course if you want though. Its probably one of the quietest psu that you'll find. plus I got mine for only 65+ shipping after mail in rebate.

I agree
but, does it really come with 2 pci-e cables now?
if so then thats 1337

How long does this PSU last for? Because i can't find ow long i does :( Though it wouldn't make or break my decision :)

Hey Hawk,

I would go for a solid PSU if I were you like some of the suggestions already. Don't skimp on the most important thing in your system.

On a side note, I am selling my OCZ Powerstream 520 that I have owned for about 8 months. I also have some OCZ Plat Rev2 sticks for sale that might help you with your ram problem.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

yeah, the Antec NeoPower (version 2.0) now has 2 pci-express cables plus 36A on the dual 12V rails compared to what it was before, i think like 33A or something. The v2.0 has sleaved cables now. I didn't know I got the v2.0 until it came in the mail. If you get one, make sure it is the version 2.0 cause its got improvements like I have listed and probably more over the first version.
