I have a CFT-750-14CS Chieftec 750W PSU that constantly makes a high-pitched noise while games are loading. the rest of the system is 9600 GT SLI, Q6600, a 750i board etc. the whining is louder when the PSU is used with the SLI setup than with single card, and it doesn't come up in any individual tests like prime 95, but only when games are loading, because that's when I suppose the most power is being drawn at the same time. my question is, how unwise would it be to not rma it? it's just that someone's been waiting for this pc, and I'm unsure about how quickly the store would replace it, and the sound is not particularly noticeable, so maybe they can live with it. thanks

PSU whines while games are loading

Are you certain that it's the psu? My 8800GTX will exhibit the same issues your talking about when load is put on it.
My Ultra does too, its most likely not your PSU.

Have you noticed any instability? If not I wouldn't worry too much, it might just be a noisy coil.
yes, I've been having stability issues also, but I thought that it's related to overclocking
for instance, just now I bootstrapped the pc and got a bsod after vista had finished loading. it had been off for most the day, and I had stress tested it for many hours with the same config, and it didn't crash before, although a few games did. the oc is very mild, turning the fsb up to 333 so that the q6600 could run @ 3.0 GHz. the full specs are:
msi p7n platinum 750i (BIOS is up to date)
ocz reaper 2gb ddrii800 kit running dual-channel cl5 5-5-15 2t @ 800 MHz (1:2)
asus 9600 gt non-oc SLI
q6600 g0 @ 3.0 GHz, vcore 1.225 V (iirc), prime-stable (tested for 8+ hours)
cooler master hyper 212 (idle temps are around low thirties, max load are around 45)
samsung spinpoint f 750gb

I've ran vistas' memtest and it reported no errors. I've also had some issues like not being able to install S.T.A.L.K.E.R and rainbow six vegas until I removed the OC from the cpu, because the installers kept complaining that the files were corrupt, although I installed and ran from the same images on a different pc just fine.
I upped the NB voltage just now to 1.25 V (one step over stock), but I'm not sure how to replicate the crashing, because usually all the games work, and the benchmarks apparently aren't extreme enough. although, if it's psu-based, the crashes could just be random, couldn't they?

I know that it's the PSU, because I moved it to a completely different box (8800gt, e8400), and it still whined while things were loading
Same family of cards, and the 8800GT will make the same noise .
Edit: Your best bet is to take everything down to stock and see if you still have stability issues.

thanks, I'm doing that now, although I've noticed that at least one problem remains: if I leave the pc unattended for a while, the screen has various artifacts and is flickery when it's woken up. I think I'm going to switch the PSU to a different one and see if such problems persist, although I can't be sure they're related. anyway, having so much problems feels bad, I'm now thinking that I should have gone with P35 and a GTX.
