ok, heres my situation. I have owned 4 video cards since I built my current sys. I've had a tnt2 M64, GeForce MX 400 (yep, thats nasty :p ), a Ti 4400, and currently a 9600pro. My mx and ti both crapped out in the same way. they would display discolored vert. & horiz. lines at boot and sometimes in win. occasionly they would output nothing to the monitor. These card were overclocked but never showed artifacting or others stress signs. Since then I replaced the mobo, cpu, hdd, and just recently my PSU. Before my new PSU my 9600 pro has been acting weird, only recog. 8 MB of its 128. reinstalling drivers solves the problem and games will then run, but if I reboot sometimes it only recog. 8Mb of ram again. Now I will soon be buying a 6800 vanilla and don't wan't it to die. could my PSU have been the problem all along? I always grounded my self and also never overclocked the 9600, or is it something else? Please help me out guys!
 
If you're getting 6800 ULTRA, you definitely need a good PSU rated above 480Watts at the least. i've had a broken PNY 4600, PNY fx5200 Ultra and now i've moved on to yet another PNY garbage 6800gt. I guess it's probably that makers such as PNY outsource their production thus results in cheaply made products.
 
yeah I do have a thermaltake 480watt but the real question was whether or not my old PSU could be killing my cards. It was an antec 300watt so I tend not to question its quality but I'm just running out of things to blame the death of my videocards on.

He said that he was getting a Vanilla, not an ULTRA.

I doubt you need 480W to run a vanilla 6800 (probably more like 300W min).
 
greatly depends on the amp distribution
there are 500watts that would be anemic
and 350s that might do it

there is no substitute for actually running the numbers

there are a great number of older monster watt PSU geared towards powering a mobo that powers the CPU off the +5V rail
not the +12V rail that many modern CPU\mobos now employ
its not uncommon to see a +10 amp increase in the +12V rail between the different generations in the same watt class,
so really total watts is no longer a valid measure, you can have the same watts,
but if the amps are on the wrong rail where you cant employ them...
