PSU upgrade advice

I was wondering if I could get some advice on upgrading my PSU.

Currently I'm utilizing a 900W Topower PSU that came with my 2008 purchase of an HP Blackbird. It was powering a 3ghz dual core Intel Core 2 Duo, liquid cooling unit, 4gb ram, Asus 680i extreme mobo, PCI Creative sound card, two nVidia 8800GT running in SLI, one internal HDD, and a CD drive.

I recently purchased an MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) mobo, 8GB of G.Skill 1333 DDR3 RAM, XFX Radeon 6950, Crucial M4 128GB SSD, and a 1TB Samsung Spingpoint (all of these recommended by people here on the forums).

The issue is that I can't get my board to fully power on/post when I plug everything in to the 900W PSU. At first I thought it was my board, but upon RMA'ing it and then trying an older 650W PSU (OKIA 650X - needed a bargain psu at the time for a build in 07) and everything works with it.

My guess is that there is some kind of voltage problem with the 900W PSU, because it seems odd that an older less potent PSU can work with my new stuff just fine.

I was thinking about getting a (based off of glancing at other threads) Corsair TX750 V2$109 for a replacement. I figure I don't really need a modular PSU (which I lose by upgrading from the Topower) and that if a 4 year old 650W unit can work, then a new 750W should be just fine.

I would prefer to not continue to use the older one despite the fact that it works because I'm sure it is a crappy inefficient in the big picture. So any advice on my choice would be appreciated, as well as any input that may confirm or refute my theory of why the 900W doesnt work and the 650W does.

Thanks again and sorry for the long post.

The system you listed only needs 450W :)

Here you go, XFX Core 650 @ 60$ after MIR, identical internally to the TXv2 650, also with 5 year warranty and comes with four PCIe connectors instead of two, a far superior deal than the corsair.. if you intend to slap another 6950 later on and maybe unlock the cards you should probably shell out the 120$ needed for the Antec HCP 850 which is an excellent PSU at a fabulous price at the moment :)

If you're don't factor in MIR, that XFX PSU isn't that great of a deal since it's $96 shipped. The extra $14 for the Corsair 750TX V2 is worth it IMO in that case. But the HCP-850 is a good choice if you're planning on HD 6950 Crossfire.

here is a one, $50 after rebate

my impression on topower is not all that positive. the company seems to have potential, but too many hit and misses with their psu,s.

that is why i don,t buy cheap on psu,s,,,,,too many things can go wrong with your computer, and you are scratching you head on what is defective..i have 3 psus, ,pc power and cooling 750w, corsair hx 650, and a antec truepower 550, or 520,. cannot remember....most of the psu,s cost over $100., but worth it to me...but i can understand the money part, i got a ocz xstream , refurb 600w from directron for $20, and it works great....they don,t have anymore, otherwise i would provide a link

usually with a power supply, the more money you spend, the better the components
