PSU squealing?

There was a constant, consistent squealing coming from my PC that was driving me absolutely crazy. I was 100% certain it was a hard drive issue but was surprised that the source of the sound was my Corsair PSU.

...is this common? The strange thing is that the squealing stopped after I blew on it and touched it a few times.

It's more common on Seasonic based units, but still not what I'd call "common". Corsair usually will RMA a PSU with choke whine. I'd contact them.

I wonder if couldve just been the fan bearing being a little squeaky since it went away after blowing out the dust. Was it making the noise when the fan wasnt spinning?

No, squealing isn't common nor should it be.

Clarification needed. Unless you have a Midas touch the description given is like saying, "I poked my computer with a stick and got faster Mhz!" :p

The strange thing is that the squealing stopped after I blew on it and touched it a few times.

Choke/capacitor squealing pretty common issue with motherboards, psu's and graphics cards. In PSU's they usually have a grounding compound on the parts that will most likely squeal, it doesn't necessarily mean the component is damaged just noise from high rippling when the hardware is placed under some sort of load.

had an enermax psu with this proublem. Took me forever to figure out what it was. I'd RMA it

Yeah, my TX850M chirps like a little baby bird. I need to RMA it. It's about 4 months old. At first I thought it was the H100i, but it's definitely the psu.

My Corsair GS800 has more of a hum because of the temp/load controlled fan. The fan under normal use uses just enough from the PSU to cause it to try and spin. This in turns causes it to hum. Under load or at idle there is no noise coming from it.

Also, I had an antec that "squealed" under load (gaming) after putting a GTX660 in the system. After rebooting it today, it no longer works (likely overloaded). I would at least contact the manufacturer for possible RMA if still in warranty.

Good Luck,
Outlaw

I got a Enermax back from RMA. Fan is squealing and driving me made. You can tap on the side of it and it will stop and then start back. Plus half the cables was missing from inside the box. I got some bad luck with Enermax power supplies.

I just got a replacement CX600 from Corsair RMA because the coil whine was so hideously awful even my wife was like "Holy crap that's annoying, what the hell is wrong with that thing?". I had to send it in.

The really weird part of it was that I could fire any machine connected to that PSU into BIOS and it was silent. However, the moment any OS started to fire up, it began the shrill ululation of demons trapped in a bottle.

*replacement CX600 tested and there is zero whine from this new unit.

My current Z68 mobo coil whines if I have the throttling settings turned on i.e C1E, speedstep, thermal management control, but as soon as those settings are disabled in the BIOS, silent and noise free.

My cx500 is having the same issue.
I´m using an old one from coolermaster (not so good, but at least this CM is not squealing)

I've seen reports of coil whine going away when moving the PC to a different house (different power outlets).
Might it have something to do with the source power?

I've never had a whining component in my life, but I've lived in the same house for 20+ years. Still wary about buying PSU's. Nothing would annoy me more than a squeeling PSU/GPU.

The chirping coming from Corsair PSUs will probably be the fan. I had 2 last year both had the problem. RMA'd them both. Can't remember the exact model but it was an 80+ Gold unit. Will never buy a Corsair PSU again. Bought a be quiet! 80+ Gold 550W instead. Flawless.
