I've read through the FAQs and general information (as well as tried to use some of the less-than-stellar calculators), and it all seems fairly complicated--but I'm wondering:

What kind of PSU would be required for the following setup?:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4GHz
( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017)

Tuniq T-120-LFB 120mm CPU Cooler
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154002)

Abit IP35 Pro Motherboard
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127030&Tpk=Abit+IP35+pro )

4x1GB Corsair XMS2 4-4-4-12 4CAS DDR2-800/PC-6400, planning on overclocking to DDR2-1066. ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034 ) x2

GIGABYTE GV-NX88T512HP GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125081&Tpk=GIGABYTE+GV-NX88T512HP+8800GT

2x Seagate Barracuda drives--not sure which model number.
1x Sony DVD-RW drive
3x case fans (one front, one rear).
----------

I've heard estimates of about 500w. But the drain, max, on the CPU is around 100-110, video card is around 110, RAM is around 40, drives are around 40, optical drive is around 25--fans are around 6 total, this equals 331. 25 or so (bad guess?) for the motherboard itself. Around 356. Maybe 10 more for an audigy 2 sound card. So 360.

Wouldn't a 420w power source (from Alienware, no idea which actual brand) suffice? How would I know? What if I wanted to overclock the CPU to around 3.0GHz?

Thanks for any and all input.

any 420w psu's you're going to find would be around 75% max efficiency. Do the math on that, not worth trying. And why the hell would you buy from alienware. Do you enjoy a good anal raping?

VX450 should be alright if you don't want to spend as much, but it won't leave much room for expansion. Check the FS section for used PSU's if you want to save money. I don't know about using one pulled from an alienware though.

I would go with:
VX550
HX520 (if you want modular)

My last computer, 3 years ago, was from Alienware. Didn't have the time or space--gave in and ordered one. You're right, wasn't worth the money.

Anyway, I broke down and bought a 550W source from Corsair. So that's taken care of.
