i am thinking of moving the psu in my case from the standard aft mount to in the front below the bays on the bottom of the case

i am planning on using the front intake area for the psu fan to exhaust out of, and im going to put a heatercore where the psu used to be so that it can vent out of the top of the case.

is there any problems that i might run into while doing this? is there an easy way to extend the powercable so that i can have a plug in the back like usual? <--- did that make any sense??? :)
 
well if you have other front intake fans, that hot air from the psu is going to go right back into your case.

you and put the psu wire through a back pci slot pannel if it will fit ?
 
i dont have any front intake fans, i planned on mounting it right to the front of the chassis

and i cant simply route it through the pci slots cause i will be constantly moving the machine (from home to work)

BTW i am talking about the case in my sig
 
i agree you will increase you case temperature by a great deal. this would also impact your watercooling performance by a lot. normally, you want the psu heat to be immediately disposed of (which it is through the back) in this way, the psu contributes little heat to the total case temperature. moving it to the front would make it another heat producing device. the air that runs through your heater core will be a lot hotter than the ambient air temperature outside the case, so your water temps will be a lot hotter.

how is he going to be greatly increasing case temp? The psu is still exhausting directly to the atmosphere, just through the front instead of the back. But that makes sense since it will be mounted in the front. I guess there is a slight issue of where his air intakes will be if he says they won't be in the front...unless he's switching around the airflow entirely and the rear is becoming intake, straight through heatercore and then the front becomes exhaust?
 
oh yeah i guess yo are right. it depends on which way he wants to have the air flow. it he reverses the airflow completely (from back to front) then the temps should stay similar

The exhaust fan on a PSU is mounted right next to the power switch and the powercord input. So it would be impossible to get the exhaust to truly exhaust properly without some modifications (because it would be set back from the front of the case in order for the power cord to rap around)....

Option 1: Cut 2 holes in the front of the case, one for the power cord to come in and one for the power switch.

Option 2: Cut one large hole in the front of the case for the entire PSU to point out of.

Option 3: Mount the PSU a litte further back and build ducting to transfer the heat from the fan out of the case.

Option 4: Open the PSU and reverse the directions of the fans and then turn the PSU on it's side so the new exhaust fan is against the front of the case. Unfortunately I don't think your case has enough room to pull this off. There just wouldn't be enough space to fit the cords in and bend them back around the PSU to get back into the main part of the system.

Also there will still be a heat issue. The main reason PSU's are on the top of tower PC's is because the heat that does escape from them can't do much damage rising to the top of the PC from their. So putting a PSU in the bottom where the heat will rise to the main area of the case will probably still increase your internal temperature a little bit.

Overall, I would probably say it's a bad idea, especially for a PC that travels.

You would be better setting up a completely external water cooling system and then mounting it to the top of the case with some bolts or straps. I am guessing it would take less time and effort, and you can run the hoses right through the top of the case between the 5.25 bays and the PSU so they would actually be fairly out of the way. Also this way it would be easily moved to a new case when you get one.
 
hmm.

you make a decent point I suppose.

once you go through all that work you might as well just mount a heatercore up front and be done with it.
