Planned system:

I5 4690K - stock clocks
GTX 970
Node 304 case
Gigabyte Z97 ITX Mobo

SSD primary drive, possibly a WD black for games/storage

I'm thinking 550 should cover it but just want to be sure....

550w should be ok, but you need to make sure that whichever supply you take has at least 40+ amps on the main 12v rail.

A 970 needs at least 30a at stock clocks to be happy.

A quality 550W PSU would be more than enough. Quality is the key word

Look for a PSU that has the needed Wattage at its peak efficiency. For Instance my GS800 is about 92% efficient in the 600W range, where my system would operate at max. And it is always good to have a little headroom. Never been to fond on operating at the max posted wattage of a PSU.

Bad advice, don't listen to this guy.

Buy maybe 50-100 watts over your maximum theoretical peak load. Unless you can get a higher wattage power supply for a lower price.
