PSU problem?

I get random reboots and every now and then on my 9800XT it says the power cable is not plugged in, but if I tinker with it, it will work.


The PSU is an Antec True Power 380watt however it was used and the person that had it before me decided there were too many cables and removed the extra ones so I am running all my stuff off of about 2 cable strands


3.2GHZ P4 800FSB Version
36GB Raptor
250GB Maxtor
2 Optical Drives
1.5GB Memory
9800XT 256MB


Was thinking of getting the Enermax 420 watt for 70 on newegg or the Antec truepower 550 watt for 99.

Do you guys think that would clear up the problem?

Your description would indicate an intermittent problem.

The ATI telling you it has no power “sometimes” is the give away.

You could re-add the missing wires (solder and heat shrink of course) to what he cut off, if he left enough to do that. That PSU should work with that system everything else being equal.

The really easy way (although more costly) would of course be a new PSU. Since your already thinking “bigger” I would probably go for the bigger Antec, it will leave your room to grow.
