PSU preventing OC, suggestions

Recently i put together a new system with basically all new components, except i brought my two year old OCZ Modstream 480w to my new system. The system ran fine, until i started overclocking it, i had great trouble even getting alittle overclock and when i managed to get to a 330 fsb with 1:1 ram ratio my system was unstable. It would lock up but not reboot, or my mouse and keyboard would freeze, or my soundcard would just make a horrible noise. I also noticed my computer horribly lagging when i plugged in a powered peripheral like my ipod.

I really would like to overlcock my C2D, can you confirm that the PSU is the culprit, becuase i do not want to drop 100+ dollars to figure out that is was something else =(. Using the PSU Calculator it said my computer would need 570 with the desired overclock (400x8) and 450 at stock speeds. I had no idea overclocking required so much more watts and how big of a factor the PSU came into play. I am using a e6400, x-fi plat, fan controller, 2 satas, x1950pro and 3 120mm fans.

I would like some suggestions on PSUs. I have read the 'list' but it is hard to see what would suit my situation the best. I really like the looks and designs of the Hiper ones and they make a 580 which seem good for my setup. Looks are not my first priority i just want soemthign that can last me a few years, and provide a stable OC running 24/7. My budget is around 100-120 and i'm open to any suggestions =)

-thanks

What happens if you remove some hardware from it? Try removing 1 stick of ram and some drives, will it oc higher or not?

Don't trust the PSU calculator. Waste of time. Doesn't tell you the amperage you need, etc. And it's seriously over rating shit. Don't bother with it

Corsair HX 520 ($106 shipped at zzf)
Seasonic S12-EP 550 or 650
Silverstone ST56ZF

Those are all excellent units.

after removing x-fi, tv tuner, 1 stick of ram, fan controller, and cd rom drive i got it up to 3.2 posting fine, but its still unstable in orthos =)

Well, good 480W PSU would have to power your rig without problems. That OCZ power supply isn't best by any means, but it's not crappy either. Besides, I don't think you'r PSU is making your system unstable - you just have to find good balanced OC, which will be stable. Did you raise your voltages to get to 3.2GHz?

That said, since you asked about PSU recommendations (although I'm not sure you need one), here are some good ones:

Sesonic S12 500W
Corsair HX 520
Silverstone Element 500W

Without disconnect other most of my drives / pci / memory then my computer would not even get a monitor signal posting at 3.2ghz with v1.4. Without changing any bios settings i achieved 3.2 and ran moderatly stable by taking out all optical drives, HDs, soundcard/tunercard, 1 stick of ram and my fan controller it posted fine and went into windows, it did crash once but i upped the voltage a tad and loosened the ram and it was okay, but as soon as i plug in my ipod or another thing the mouse would lag and it would become unstable. And i made a mistake in the previous post, my OCZ is only a 450watt.
