PSU powering dual mobo's??

I have been collecting mATX motherboard and CPU combos for several weeks now so as to get some folding done, but really don't want to have so many PSU's cluttering the place up, so would it be possible to wire a strong PSU to power 2 motherboards? It would be necessary connect the ATX power switches so that the systems kick on at the same time . . .
Is this even remotely possible? Thanks for the input!

The idea is interesting. But I don’t think it’s feasible.

http://www.extrememhz.com/e5ncInst1-p1.shtml << talks about 2 MB’s in one case, but has 3 PSU’s… one for the cooling of course. ;)

If you wanted to try it tho, if you made a splitter for the ATX connector, I would think that one of the connectors would need to have the green wire removed. You MIGHT then be able to put in a SPDT push to make switch in, and run a line to both MB’s individual power switch headers. This would keep both MB’s from telling the PSU to switch on at the same time, but I don’t know for sure if the green power on wire actually sends volts to the MB or if the MB just connects the green to ground to maintain power.

On the other side… shutting down would be a major pain in the ass… cuz you would have to shut down BOTH systems at the SAME time… and hope that they took the EXACT same amount of time to shut off in order to not have one go off prematurely. That’s my guess anyways.

I would say, go for a case, and just mod it to have 2 PSU’s in there. Would be simpler. Specially if you modded the PSU’s to run off only one cord. If they are low wattage folding only boxes, there shouldn’t be a lot of issue pulling more amps than the cord is rated for.

I'm sure one of the smarter guys will have something more concrete for you.

get a bunch of 1U servers if you're serious about folding

Hard to beat 2nd hand prices for mATX boards . . . a trip to the local sheat metal store . . . and hours of incoherent mumbling . . . . :D
