PSU or Board?

After nearly 4 yrs of virtually flawless use (Thermaltake Purepower 500, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UDP4 board, Phenom II 940 and HD4850) my system is rebooting every 8 - 10 seconds from a cold start, never getting to bios. You can hear the HD change up and down in pitch in concert with the case fans which slow down then speed up.

Eventually it boots after a power down, typically on the 5th or 6th attempt. Once it's up it runs fine, ditto for warm reboots.

Is this more symptomatic of a failing PSU or could there be issues with the board's power handling?

Sounds like it could be either, but given the models it's more likely the PSU. If you don't have a DMM, you can check the voltages through BIOS, or if there is no warranty and you know how to open a PSU safely you can inspect it that way.

4 years, you are out of warranty anyway

cut the damn sticker, 4 screws and you are in, probably a gnar dust bunny in there anyway

what I do; I get it in the kitchen sink with some citrus based solvent and plenty of hot water...no shit, rinse it really good and GET IT GOOD AND DRY before you plug it back in, I park 'em behind my mining rig for a few hours, dry as a bone. Anyway, once it is clean you can see what is going on better.

Ok thanks for the ideas. New board & psu on the way (guess it's the only way to be sure) ... will do further testing later.

Both were run hard so I figure remaining lifespan is limited anyway.

Another DDR2 system on the way out ...

Older Purepowers were generally crap anyway and shouldn't be used. Since you've discarded both the PSU and board, I guess it's a moot point.

He ment that that particular line was shitty, especially the older ones. This "500w" unit is actually a 405W CWT unit that couldn't even do 400w continuous.

So maybe you should keep your sarcasm to yourself.

fair enough, I read "purepowers" as power supplies and went off half cocked

my bad
