PSU - Motherboard - Builder...Where does the problem exist?

Let me begin to apologize for my noobness, as I've only built one rig before. I decided to make the jump to PCI-E this month and started on my second build a few days ago. Last night I managed to assemble everything accordingly, double checked connections and what not, and went to power the beast.

Of course nothing spurt or sprang to life, not the fans, lights, circuits, drives, etc. I went back and made sure everything was securely and completely connected. I even decided to try a new outlet, and sure enough I couldn't get it to start.

Now what I'm trying to find out is where the problem exists. I know it's a broad and difficult question to ask, but I was wondering if there are any signs or pointers I may know that can help me diagnois the problem. I can't tell whether it maybe my PSU, Motherboard, etc.

Again this is my second build, so please take it easy on me.

Here are my specs:

OCZ Modstream 450w
3000+ winnie
1GB of Ram
7800gt (eVGA)
MSI Neo4 Plat

Note: I was wondering if I had one of the modular cables plugged into the PSU, but not the device it goes to, would this make it so that I could not power up the PSU?

Thanks again

Can anyone help me out? I'm still computerless and need to try to fix it before next week.

Thanks

Well, if you're pushing the power button and it does NOTHING, than I'm thinking either the power to the mother board, or the cable to your power button, isn't hooked up properly. Either that or your PSU is dead. Oh, and you *did* remember to flip the switch on the back of the PSU, right? lol just making sure.

As far as the modular cable plugged in, I don't know. It wouldn't hurt to unplug it and try without it.

So, make sure you plugged in the power to the motherboard properly, and that the case's switch is wired properly to the motherboard (right polarity and what not). Also, there should be *2* power connections on the motherboard, one is a small 4 pin 12V ATX connection near the CPU. Make sure you didn't forget that one, as it's easy to miss.

Yes, I made sure to turn the switch to on before starting it up (on the back of the PSU). I even tried to connect the video card but still got nothing. I also made sure to plug in the 4-prong cable into the mobo (near the CPU).

I'm going to go through it again and if I get the same results, more than likely I'll be buying a new PSU tommorrow.

This wouldn't mean that the motherboard is dead right?

Have you tried connecting a couple of drives and jumping the PSU?

Yes, I've made all the necessary and full connections to my drives (CD, Floppy, Hard) as well as my fans and video card.

I just thought of another thing to check. If there's a little switch on the back of the PSU to select 112V or 240V, make sure it's 112V. That is, if you live in the USA.

But did you try jumping it by shorting green to black in the ATX connector?

Just another reminder, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to building rigs, and therefore I do not know what you mean by shorting the wires.

I would appreciate any other insight you may have.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Yes, I made sure the voltage was set to the US standard. Mine however is set to 115V, as there is no 112V option...at least to my knowledge.

Make sure you have a couple of drives connected when you try this as most modern PSU's won't jump withou at least some load.

Thanks for the link, I really do greatly appreciate it.

As long as I have the PSU plugged into a few drives to run some rails, I shouldn't get hurt during this process should I?

Not as long as you don't leave it running for long. Just jump it...if it works then shut it off.

Alright, I ended up picking up a OCZ Powerstream tonight. I got home, installed it, plugged in all of my hardware, and when I went to turn it on, I had the same result....NOTHING!

I'm seriously getting frustrated, as I have no idea what maybe the problem. I even tried jumping my original Modstream as instructed in this thread, and got no results. Would anyone know if my power outlets would be the cause? I have quite a few things plugged into them.

I need help...badly.

If you have exhausted all other means, have you looked to the mobo for the answer? Have any spare PCI-e mobos you could use to check if the mobo isnt dead? Did you try shorting the green-to-black like the above people have mentioned? When I built my rig (my sig) I got lucky and didnt connect anything wrong, and didnt have any problems then ran around my house. Besides the point, just re check everything. Patience you need for computers, so dont run out of it, or you will end up kicking your PC, which I did to get the money for this one. Don't ask.

Whoops, typo. That's what I ment, sorry.

Unfortunately I do not have an extra mobo...only an AGP one. I'm going to rebuild my pc to make sure everything is in order. I'm also going to try to plug it into an outlet that is completely free.

Man this sucks.... :p

I had the same problem.

I took out a stick of ram ( I was running dual channel) and all worked well.

So you're saying that your entire system was not functioning, because of one ram stick?

Anyone know if there is truth to this?

Pull the plugs for the power and reset switches and short those pins with a blade type screwdriver just to make certain that the switches themselves are not fubared. It happens, you could also have the reset hooked to the power and the power hooked to the reset.

Double check everything and when that fails triple check it twice.

Alrighty, I went back and reinstalled every bit of hardware I had. Not sure what I did the first time around, but it seems everything is working fine. Now I'm stuck with a OCZ 520w Powstream with less than a minute use. Hopefully Microcenter will take it back tommorrow.

Thanks again everyone for your input.

Yes, that is true, as a matter of fact it happened yesterday in a different forum: In This Thread . Microcenter will take the PSU back, I've returned a couple of things w/o questions and they've given me my money back just as long as you take the receipt also.

Yep, I've resealed everything and have the receipt in hand.
